computer controlled tranny or not?

I am looking for a 91-96 extended cab 4 wheel drive f150/250. Is there a computer controlled tranny and a non computer controlled tranny, and which trucks had which tranny? which is better? Is there any auto tranny that had problems and should be avoided if possible? thanks!!

Early '90's trucks were available with the AOD and C6 which are not electronically controlled, and AOD was 5.0 only. The other tranny's were electronically controlled and the later models were more robust due to updates. In HD trucks(F250 and bigger) this bodystyle and powertrain continued into '97 and part of '98.

I'll ruffle feathers on this post but-the electronic transmissions-e40d well I have them are not too bad-I know here it comes --used in the right contest-heavy hauling and towing click it out of overdrive-not sure about the others-I put close to 200000 on 2 of them in work vans -1994 and 1995-can't complain!!!

I agree with you. I have had 2 E4OD transmissions, one in a 1990 Bronco and my current one in my 1996 F-250. Both went over 100/000 miles with no problems.....keep them serviced!
