96 F-150 4x4 , E4OD problem.

96 F-150 4x4 , E4OD problem.

My tranny started making a ticking sound kind of like a rocker arm sound.Then it got louder and went in and out of gear then clunked loud and wont move. The thing will reverse and thats how i got home. Any ideas what blew up ? The oil stinks now.

The ATF stinks? If so you probably burned out a transmission band. If your fluid level is OK, I'd start calling junkyards for a used replacement.

I think I would forget about pricing out a used one and look at taking it to a transmission shop for rebuild or putting a reman transmission in. I bought my 93 with a burned up E4OD and priced used transmissions. 1/2 as much as a reman and a ton of miles on them. Not worth messing with if you ask me.

Picked up another 96 F-150 4x4 dirt cheap for the cab to put on my rolled F-350 4x4.Trans seems to work good,nice oil and factory cooler. Doing the swap tomorrow.
