Can someone identify this snake, came across it while moving some wood. I left him alone and he crawled away back toward the woods. he was about 24"s long
I live in southeast virginia if that makes a differents, sorry took this on my camera phone!
He doesn't have a head shaped like a viper, although I don't think I've ever seen one colored up exactly like that in western Kentucky. My guess is non-poisonous, but I'm not a huge fan of snakes either way.
Looks like a little corn snake, harmless leave it alone, they eat TONS of mice.....Doesn't have the viper shaped head, if it did .........refer to 12 ga. shotgun.
Yup, simple garter snake. Big 'um for 24". It would've scared me when I first saw it. They do bite with the little razor sharp teeth but non-poisonous. They prefer to slither away than fight.

Corn Snake = Rat Snake...One in the same. Forgot to mention that earlier.
I love snakes! When I had a house near the river, I used to catch bull snakes and put them in the crawl space to deal with the mice. The house I have now is near an 11 acre pond, so I get all kinds of bull and king snakes. I always now when one has made it into the house...I hear a blood curdling scream coming from the basement. I usually start laughing and reach for my gloves, knowing exactly what's causing my wife's heart to stop beating!
Oh, and dont forget Blue Racers...they are fun to play with!
If you live in the country, non-poisonous snakes are your best friends. The amounts of mice and rodents they get rid of are mind boggling, the smaller ones eat the hell out of insects in the garden..............You don't have to like em', just don't kill em'. Poisonous snakes are fairly easy to spot with a little knowledge, and no match for a 20ga. shotgun!.

not sure why but those small dark spots on is back were black not brown like the pic showed.
The good news is the snake lived and sliddered away unharmed, but before that I was going to get him in a trash can and relocate him but he didnt like the shovel and looked like he was going to lounge at me, lol
Taking the pic I wasnt to scaried cause he looked pretty calm but my boss was yelling at me not to get to close cause he thought it was posionous and told me to kill it but I got it to crawl away.
