I just replaced the shifter coller and moved the colume 1/4in. in to accomendate the new power sterring conversion. The problem now is it is very hard to get it in 1st or reverse. Second and 3rd are fine. When I can get it to wiggle into first then reverse is no problem. Been under tweeking the linkages but to no avail.
Any ideas? Thanks.
you maybe wanna check the brackets on your tranny they might some minor tweaking, also check to see if it is completly coming out of second or third, that would make it hard to grab the other two gears ,i had this same problem before on an 82 f-100 that previously owned.i hope i've been helpful.
Everything is stock OEM except I had to adjust the colume 1/4 in into the cab. That was all the underdash colume bracket had on its slot. That allowed the Bendix unit to fit. I also replaced the shifting collar prior to this, to replace the worn out shift lever pin, but it seemed to still shift fine. Then I did the adjustment for the Bendix.
Thanks all

Thanks Pard729 I will check to see that 2&3 are coming all the way out.
It seems the 2&3 is coming out. It just takes the smallist little bump on the tran shift lever when under the truck to get 1st in. By moving the colume 1/4 in toward rear could this have changed the angle of the dangle on the shift rods not leaving them with enough umph to do the job?
ThanksEvery thing so close this is the last thing to make it road worthy again.
The truck was orginaly (Arm Strong) Manual steering and I added a 68 Bendix Box and pump to it. The colume was 1/4 inch to long into the box so I noticed I had that much room as a normal adjustment. So now the shift links and rods were also moved back 1/4 inch. As everything was working before I have to feel this is what has created the problem but after playing with it for 3 or 4 hours I still can't see what the problem is. As all I have to do is barley bump the shifter lever on the tranny to make it drop into 1st I even thought about putting in a mild spring there.:-)
OK I have gotton underneath and again played with the linkage this morning with a very clear head. Something I am wondering about?? As you know the shift pattern on a 3 on the tree is to pull in and down then up and away then straight down. Well before I replaced the shift collar it was a real Elvis P. shifter--you know "rock around the clock" Now it is very tight and there just does not seem to be as much movement from neutral in toward you before going down for first. Could this be something in the column? There seems to be the correct movement from neutral out to second.
Thanks again for your time and thoughts on this.
it sounds to me like you are in a bind from the 1/4" that you moved it,may may consider removing the box, welding the bolt holes to fill them then drilling holes in the other direction to get the room you need.
or.............a simpler plan find the right collumn to fit the box you have.does the donor truck have the collumn in it still?that would be a start of places to look.
This truck is licenced and inspected ,and has been in the family since bought new by my Grandad. My Dad does not have the upper body strength to use the manual steering any more so that is why I converted, so there is no doner and it is very hard to find 3 on the trees in my area. I have considered moving the box out with a re-drill. Anyone done this before? What do I need to look for or do?
Thanks parrd, and to everyone else also.
