Mark, I saw a post somewhere where you were discussing the gears in a E4OD/4R100. Someone was saying his gears were aluminum. Those are the gears in question. They are all steel.
The carriers, which is the part holding the gears in place, were either aluminum or steel. The gears themselves have always been steel.

I agree alum gears would shred under a shock or load. At that point your tires might not be the weakest point in the towing equation, it would be the foil confetti your gears just turned into when you try to pull a load.
