I have a 1969 351W. It had a C4 attached to it, but the case was cracked. I bought a fresh C6 from a friend, but it did not have a torque converter. I called Advanced Auto (local parts store) abd they had little to no information for me. I then called Summit and they said for my setup, one of thier torque converters is overkill.
So, now my questions.
1) Will the C4 torque converter work. If not what are the differences?
2) Since all I am looking for is a factory replacement, where would I find the numbers on the C6 to get the correct torque converter.
I tried to look it up in the books (the torque converter) but the barrage of required information was killing me.
I agree with Summit, that I do not want a performance stall converter, just a factory replacement.
If it helps here is the driveline info:
1969 351 W
bored 30 over
1970 D00e heads (ported & polished)
edelbrock performer intake, cam, fuel pump, and 600cmf carb
The C6 is out of a 1986 ford van.
This will be a daily driver/cruiser, no racing, hauling, or heavy pulling (I believe that we are both two old for that)
C6 & C4 converters are not interchangeable; the difference would be in the front pump drive and/or input shaft spline. TCI sells a "High Torque Towing" torque converter for C6. It should have a stall speed similar to or slightly lower than stock. PAW sells them for $226.95 (2000 Catalog). It says for 71-91 Ford C6 with 1.375 crank pilot (289, 302, 351, 400, 429, 460) Part #443630
It seems to me that the only engines that do not fit this category are the FE's and the diesels, so this should be a easy torque converter to find in salvage yards and tranny shops.
go to www.hughesperformance.com they make some of the best torque convertors out there and they make some for stock or towing not just racing convertors.
Also right now torque convertors are reasonably priced at Napa I bought my heavy duty towing one for my C-6 for $51.00. But that was my cost for my business but they don't have that much of a mark up on them from my cost to retail cost
The C4 and C6 torque converters are not interchangable. Also all C6 torque converters are not the same. What you are asking for is for is a "small block" C6 standard torque converter. Depending on what kind of parts houses you have in your area, NAPA would probably be a good place to start. Any transmission parts supplier should have one. I get most of my parts from a supplier in Atlanta called APD transmission parts. I think I paid $24.95 exchange (rebuilt) for the last sb C6 torque converter that I got there.
