Binding Somewhere??

We pulled my C6 transmission out of my 77 F-150 4X4, to mate it up to a 351m I just bought. Everything starts out ok. We are able to get the torque converter to flexplate mounted. But as soon as we tighten the bellhousing to block, something seem to bind up the engine and we can't get the engine to rotate.

FYI...new stock torque converter. Also, there was a slight dent on the rear crankshaft collar adjacent to the flexplate, which we managed to fix. This 351 came out of a truck that was totaled.

Any suggestions would really be appreciated.

Rich

Binding Somewhere??

just by chance is the flex plate hitting the bell houseing preventing the engine from turning over? I would pull the tranny out and look at the bell houseing to see if the flex plate some how dug the teeth this should be easy to notice since the houseing is aluminum and the flex plate is hardened steel. or maybe the starter is hitting the flexplate not alowwing it to turn. Can you turn the motor over by hand and listen to see if something is rubbing somewhere

Are you sure the converter is installed into the front pump all the way? It's a very common problem. You've got to keep rotating the converter while pushing back on it until it imbeds all the way back. And then make sure it doesn't slip out as you're installing the tranny.

Nope, that was one thing I made sure of, the torque converter was fully engaged in the transmission. My Brother-in-law took a look and it appears the flex plate was binding on the inside of the bellhousing. Well, we'll find out next weekend for sure.
