Flexplate Torque Converter hookup issues?

So I changed out my flexplate on my 351w. I'm bolting it all back together and the stud on the torque converter that I can see is lined up with the hole in the flexplate, but how do I get a nut on it. I can't seem to pull it forward with my hand (can't get a hold of it) and it's not through far enough to pull through with a nut, do I just need to gently use a prybar through the starter hole? I don't want to break anything!

The jack is still under the crossmember, the bellhousing-engine bolts all went in without putting up a fight (once I got them lined up) so I don't think anything is binding. Any insight for me?

I think you might need to loosen the engine-tranny bolts back up. If you have drawn up these bolts, you might have the torque converter in a bind, I am thinking there is not enough room for it to slide all the way out of the flexplate. Hopefully it's not jammed in there so tight that it has ruined the pump in the front of the tranny, it has happened.

Once you get it freed up, you will need to lift the torque converter a little bit to put it in the bolt holes, it does sag down some when it's out by itself in the tranny.

Actually... I seem to have had a moment of excessive mental flatulation (aka brainfart).

I was a little tired and since the top bolts were sitting flush I thought the bottom ones were too. I went inside for a bit and looked at it again and d'oh. Tightened up the bottom bolts a good 1/2 inch and she sat just fine so she's all bolted in now.

Now to adjust the linkage, bolt the crossmember and floorpan back up and she should be ready to roll! I'll worry about that tomorrow though

Do you think this might have been why my starter was grinding?

My bad - I meant to tell you about the torque converter alignment issues. Sorry. Glad you got it fixed. And, that flex plate is awful!

Check the starter gear really good. If it was running against those teeth, it may not be in very good shape and you don't want to ruin the new teeth.

I also hope you didn't smash the pump in the transmission, that'll mean taking it all apart again and a lot more money being spent.

The starter was practically new and I did make certain to check it. The teeth on the starter look fine but thank you for mentioning it.

I don't think I damaged the pump. Once I tightened the lower bellhousing bolts she lined right up and I had no problem. I was careful with how much force I applied because I had read about that problem and didn't want to damage anything.
