Too much fluid?

(This post is very long winded... scrolll to the bottom for the big bold letters if you just want to know my question.)

short story long, i was driving down the road one day and my truck acted like it went into neutral. i tried changing the transmission filter and that didnt work, so the truck sat for about a month.

Here we are a month later and I learned that the neutral safety switch was my problem. swap it out, drain all the old fluid, put new gasket, gasket sealer, the works.

Put it together and we had a problem. I drove down the road about a block with NO PROBLEMS and then it acted like it was in neutral again. I was so stumped... my grandfather said we didnt put enough fluid in (He was thinking the torque converter was empty..)

well anyways, we added more fluid and it still didnt work.

That was yesterday.

Today I woke up and disconnected the fitting on the neutral safety switch and it was filled with mud (the old side) my friend i suppose didnt clean it out when he was down there. so i cleaned it and now i drove around the block with no problems... except that i believe that we added to much tranny fluid because its having trouble shifting now.

Im so close to getting back on the road again.... how can i drain the excess? it seems to be showing above where it needs to be on the dipstick... somewhat.

So my question is..... How can I drain the excess tranny fluid without removing the pan? is it even possible?

I dont have another gasket and would prefer to not go spend more cash on gaskets and fluid. I have honestly spent like $150 on fluid the past month, and threw most of it away due to leaks that werent fixed properly.

Thanks in advance... sorry im a little long-winded... my heads in all sorts of places.

If you disconnect a cooler line and start the engine it will pump it out for you.

is it possible for the neutral safety switch to go bad so quickly? the problem isnt going away even though I lowered the level of fluid. Its acting like it did before i swapped to switch.

It isn't likely. It is MUCH more likely that you have a broken wire going to the Transmission Range Sensor (TRS,) which is what the neutral safety switch is really called.

thanks a lot everyone for the help. Is the wires going down there just a wiring kit i can pick up? Like plug and play? i know the plug on bottom (the one that goes into the TRS is just plug and play... but what about up top? I tried following the line but had a hard time because everything is just filthy under the truck. Thanks again for pointing me in the right direction!

so i pulled all the wire harnessing out for that transmission range sensor and didnt find any cuts at all... cleaned the connections and started the truck with all my gears working but not shifting out of first. that is a different problem i believe but am working on fixing that as well. then it stopped working, and went into its neutral mode where i couldn't drive. luckily i was in the driveway at the time.

Also, when this neutral thing engages and it doesnt let me get into any gears, like its doing, then when i go to put it in park i hear a loud grinding noise. it only happens when i shift into park.

also, the front driveshaft is somehow caught on the skid plate, the 4x4 doesnt work (or wont engage, never has since ive owned it) then it has never moved or been a problem. But it seems to have somehow kinda wedged into the skid plate.. im going to take a rubber sledge to it tomorrow and try to get it off.
