1989 F250 Please help!

I have a 1989 F250 5.0 FI, 4x4, auto. I was driving one day and the truck died. I could not get it started for a period of time. After it cooled down it started up. It ran for a little bit and then died again. You can start it up and it will idle for about 15 minutes, if you go to give it gas it starts cutting out until it dies. It will sometimes cut out and die at just an idle. Brought it to a shop the machanic has no clue what it is. He checked every thing we already checked or replaced.

Things I have replaced/done:
External high pressure fuel pump
Throttle position sensor
Ignition module
EGR Position sensor
All Relays
Fuel filter
Complete tune up
Have tested the injectors
Ran codes
Checked spark
Checked fuel pressure

Any ideas? Greatly appreciated ASAP.

I'm betting on either a fuel pressure regulator or one of the low pressure in tank pumps.

Negative

The fuel pressure regulator has been replaced. Forgot to mention. The fuel pressure is at the normal pressure for the truck at an idle and when it starts to cut out.

Hmmm, ok, lets start looking at the e-coil thingy, I'm betting that its something electrical and the longer it runs it hotter the component gets until it ultimately stops because as heat builds so does resistance.

Have you tried running codes??

I don't know its name, cuz its not a coil so to say, but if you follow the main lead plug wire going to the center of the dist cap up about 6 inches. Its about the size of a two decks of cards stacked on each other.

Okay, this is a really dumb question, but I'll ask it anyway. (Because that's just what I do) I am assuming that you have dual tanks, if so does it matter which tank you have selected? Mine, if I switch it to the front tank, will run anywhere from 5 to 15 minutes, and then start crapping out. If I quickly switch to the rear tank, it recovers and works fine. Out of dumb, idle curiousity one day, I let it die while switched to the front tank. It took it about ten minutes, but then it restarted, and ran for about 10 minutes before it started crapping out again. Now, the interesting thing is that my switch is not even fused, so therefore I am assuming that I am not even switching tanks anyway. I am assuming that the most that is happening is the truck eventually figures out not that the front tank is switched on, but that the rear tank is switched off. I pulled the fuse panel out, and not only is it not fused, the wire to the back is not even there. Anyway, think I'll need a Haynes to figure out which loose wire is the one I need. Don't know if this will help, but your problem does sound similar to mine. Besides, I'm not really here to help anyway.

I believe Dean88 has the correct area, the fuel system. I would suspect the low pressure in tank fuel pump. Ask your mechanic to check the fuel pump volume. I have seen the pressure within specs., in the 35 to 40 psi range, but the amount of fuel from the fuel line was barely a trickle. This low volume of fuel would be barely enough to support the fuel demand for an engine at idle and would instantly cause a stall or lean misfire when the fuel demand is increased.

Fuel Pump?

It does have dual tanks. It does not matter which tank it is on. It will stall out on both tanks. If it was the in-tank pump, why would it do it on both tanks? unless for some weird coinsedince (however you spell it lol) that both in tank pumps are going out... ??????

Does it throw a check engine light when it stalls?

If so pull codes, heres a website that shows you how to do that. Ford Fuel Injection How To Run a Self-Test

So the truck gives you 11 and 11 for the codes? No trouble found?

What is the fuel pressure? As long as it's in spec, you can ignore all the posts about the fuel system, it should all be working fine. I would also lean towards something ignition-related like the coil. Do you have spark when it dies?

Spark when it dies

andym,

There is spark when it dies, it is a yellowish color. As per the fuel pressure, it was between 35-40, then when it started to die out, the pressure jumped up to about 42 to try to keep it running, but died out eventually. We were thinking that it could be the pick up coil inside the distributor. What does anyone think about that? or know about that?

Did you get this fixed. I have the same problem. I fixed all the codes and was getting 11 10 11 on KOEO in code reader. Starts when it is cold but not when it is hot. Even sitting in the hot sun in Dallas makes it too hot.
