Distributor Ignition Pickup Replacement

I have a 1989 F250 XLT 351W (EFI) 5 spd manual 4X4, 155,000 miles.

I have a problem with the truck dieing, mostly in the summer time after I have driven it for miles, cut it off and let it set. It usually starts up and runs 1 block and dies. Fires up after alot of cranking and the drives 1 block and dies. Fires up after more cranking and usually will run there after. I have thought fuel vapor lock but I thought electric fuel pumps circulated the fuel for cooling purposes so I'm thinking distributer ignition pickup. I've replace all 3 fuel pumps and fuel filter and pressure regulator.

I tried to install the new ignition pickup last month (module on side of distributor has been replaced, NAPA on side) and ran into a couple of problems. I took the cap and rotor button off but could not disassemble it any further. What is the secret. I am trying to do this with the distributor installed. How does this thing come apart?

Any help?

Ya gotta pull the distributor out to do it, push out the tension pin retaining the drive gear and then remove the shaft.

If your distributor has a lot of play in it bushings, replace the whole thing as a unit. Distributor can and do wear out and cause problems.

Oh Crap

Not the answer I wanted to hear. I'm not sure I remember how to set timing anymore or even where my light is......

Do you agree that the pickup could be causing the problem?

Yes, the pickup could very well be causing the problem. But if it was my truck I would try replacing the ignition coil first.
