I have a 2000/F350/7.3l/PS/4X4 and recently noticed a service engine soon light on. At the time this occurred the truck would continue running but felt like it was missing or running on 7 cylinders. I have since had the code read and got this P1272. My mechanic tells me that means the #2 cylinder hi/low side open and that I need a fuel injector. I have read a lot on this site and found out my problem could be many other (cheaper) issues like wiring clips and harness. I intend on checking all these things out today.
I wanted to bounce this off some of you that have been where I am before. My light is always off and the truck runs great when it is cold. Once the truck warms up, generally 5 miles or so down the road the light comes on and it runs rough. This seems like a very important clue but I don't have any idea for what? If my problem was mechanical (injector) wouldn't it be all or nothing?
If the problem was electrical like a loose clip or harness woulndt it be more inconsistent? My problem is like clock work, you can bank on it. Cold runs great, warm runs like it is missing?
Heat can do a number of things. In addition to pulling the valve cover, I'd suggest ohming the injector both cold and hot to see if there are any different readings in the solenoid. You can also observe the oil discharge from that injector both cold and hot to see if the amount of oil the injector spits changes when it warms up.
This of course assumes the correct rated engine oil that is not due for a change and is full. Injector internals or o-rings are another possibility, since the hot oil will flow better than cold oil will. Before pronouncing a new injector was needed, the mechanic should have probably buzz tested the injectors, then monitored ICP psi & IPR %, both cold & hot. That could have given some clues.
