My truck used to clunk when shifting into OD. I'm told this is common with AODs. Its an '85. Well, it clunks going into other gears now, it also vibrates when I brake, and when I'm going down the road, the truck vibrates. Like I'm going over a slightly bumpy road. And it whines from the drivetrain somewhere. Well, maybe a hum. Is this the U-joints? I don't have a vise or a grease gun, so I'll have someone do it, if thats what it is. How much would that cost? Thanks guys.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 14-Jun-02 AT 09:52 PM (EST)]If it clunks when putting it into foward from reverse, or reverse from a foward gear, that would point to a U-joint problem. The vibration at higher speeds, like 55 MPH and above, would also point to a U-joint problem.
The whine somewhat points to the same problem. Ever hear a repetitive squeak (open your windows) when moving from a stop to, like, 3 mph?
Clunking going from one forward gear to another forward gear, if that's what you mean, sound strange.
I don't know prices. I changed my rear-most U-joint out and solved my problem.
The hum, the vibration and the vibration while braking might point to a wheel bearing.
