I have a 79 Ford parts truck. The rear diffy is solid. there is really no play or clunks. I want to take it out and put it in my 85 truck which is getting lots of play and clunking. But I cannot find any info as to what a 11J axle is. This from the tag on the door. It does not look like a limited slip.
My 85 door tag says it has an 18.
Also if I change this will it affect gas mileage?
Is there a tag on the actual axle? The tag should be under one of the studs that holds the 3rd member in on the 79 if it is a 1/2 ton. On the 85 it should be under one of the bolts that holds the rear cover on. The tags will tell you what ratio they are and if they are limited slip. The tag will say 3L55 or a 3:55 limited slip or 3 55 or an open and so on, just see what both trucks have and if they are close to the same you shouldn't have much of a milage change. If one truck it a 3/4 or 1 ton you will have a lot more complicated swap on your hands. The 79 should have a 9" and the 85 should have an 8.8" totally different designs that might require you to get a different length drive shaft, but spring mounts should be the same, not positive about the spring mounts though.

Yes the spring mounts are the same. The 80 to 86 Ford trucks shared the same frame behind the cab as the 73-79 trucks.
It is a 1/2 ton. I only found one tag on the 79 and took it off and cleaned it. It was badly rusted. All I could find is 2 E that is all. No other tag.
I bought the 79 for the rear springs. they are the heavy duty camper special springs. The spring in my 85 are very weak. I put any load and the truck sways from side to side. No load it is fine. Hauled too many heavy loads over the last couple of years. The springs are not broken, just weak. Since this diffy in the 79 shows no play and is tight. I will also put it in. Got my work cut out before next winter.
I do not have a manual for the 70's truck that would help me Identify what 11J means in the axle code of the door tag.
