Hey. I went out to my truck today after it sat for about 5 hours. There was a large puddle of antifreeze under it, and it was dripping about a drop every 2 seconds. I added water to the resevior and drove for about 5 minutes. It had been dripping from behind the from fan off the block. When I checked after driving the dripping had stopped. Water pump? Or something else?
Thanks
Curious, on the same note, there seems to be some sort of (what looks to be ) vent tube by the water pump. I noticed when I first filled my engine antifreeze and started the truck it was dripping from there untill the thermostat opened, alls fine now. I dont know if yours is dripping from the same place as mine was or If it that was normal. Is your truck still dripping? If so could possibly be the thermostat. Just a stab in the dark.
There is a type of freeze plug in the water pump just below the shaft that has a weep hole. If there is a leak from the weep hole the water pump shaft bearing and/or seal is going out.
The water pump has a weep hole that is designed to leak when the pump goes out. I'd start by verifying where the coolant is coming from. Hopefully it's just a simple water pump or hose issue.
Also, the thermostat seals are a known weak point. Mine also leaks a little but at the moment not enough to really mess with it. I noticed some drops on one of my radiator pipes and had to investigate every now and then after driving my truck to find the leak. I found that I am starting to leak a little from my thermostat housing. This is an easy fix and there are better aftermarket thermostat housings.
Thanks guys! The video and the manual were very helpful . Now, I just need to confirm that it is the water pump that is causing the leak. Could I take the fan and shroud off and run it to see where the leak is? Now it only takes a minute to start leaking after it is started. I ran it for a couple of minutes today, but it is hard to pinpoint the leak. It is dripping off the lip of the oil pan right below the crankshaft, but I can't see anything above that.
Thanks!

Sounds like the water pump to me. It's most likely leaking at the shaft. I would change the pump. Matter of fact I did change my pump because of the same leak.
By the time you get the fan and shroud off to see where the leak is you have got the worst part of changing the pump already done.
