My 92 F150 work truck has an automatic and it can be started in second gear which really helps starting off at slick intersectons. My personal truck is a 5 speed and it does very well in the snow for a 2WD. Its an extended cab with dual tanks and a couple of hundred pounds of tools in the bed mounted box. If a storm is coming I will fill both tanks for added ballast. The 300/C6 drive train was a favorite with a lot of plow operators.
The big problem in snow is stopping and turning. Keep your speed down and find a nice empty parking lot at the first snow and go out and play. Kind of like driving fast on a dirt road at a third of the speed. Just be careful of the light poles! Don't ask me how I know.

this is all true, and hey man i just realized your in north reading, im over next door in wilmington! lol

He's probably passed by a lot of us. He stopped in Knoxville, TN a few days ago, and that's just an hour from my house, lol. We'll all have to get together sometime.

This thread is a couple months old but I thought I would post this pic of my 300 pulling. It has stock sized tires and 3.55 axles. I'm wondering how the 4.11 works for 6cylbill? This load was 3.0 tons of gravel.

With the factory tires, I would suggest keeping the 3.55's. I have 31'' tires and 4.11 GR. There's nothing I can't pull if I can grab traction but my highway power (anything past 50 mph) sucks compared to what it used to be. I have a comfortable top speed of 70 but I cruise at 60. It's my personal opinion that any half ton 300-powered truck shouldn't be geared any higher than 3.55 or lower than 3.73.

4.11's are good for play and work trucks, or for trucks that rarely see the highway. If you do a lot of highway driving, keep the 3.55, you will be much happier.

E4OD, 31'' tires, 4.9L, 60 mph @ 2,000 rpm. 16 mpg on a good day.

These old trucks work hard, don't they? They aren't fast but they'll get the job done.

Thanks for the response. It seems like mine at 60 is somewhere around 1700 in OD. But it will run along at 75 for all that matters without much huff.

What I need to do is keep the load around 2.5 ton. It was much happier with that. I need to do a add-a-leaf or something to give the rear springs a slight boost. We brought back 96 square bails a couple weeks ago on the 16' flatbed trailer and it was heavy on the tongue.

Another thing I see you have is a locker. I'm considering that for the additional traction on a couple of the gravel hills when pulling a heavy load and just all around grip like in wet grass. They really lay down the limestone gravel and there is wash boarding right when I need the most traction. I did use 4wd that last time but I really want to keep the hubs unlocked so I can use the lo on the transfer case for backing up in tight spaces with the loads. Works fantastic. This truck is not a daily driver and I do baby it when working hard like that gravel load. Whats kind of funny is I hardly ever see it any higher than 2500rpm when pulling it. All it does is make more noise....

I've got a 92 300/5speed with 2:73's. This truck has been in the family forever and used to be my brothers truck when he was younger. It has been through 2 of us beating the living daylights out of it hauling and towing stuff, and it still runs out awesome! I rarely get in overdrive, I kind of use 4th as a cruise control, if I get in overdrive im doing 80+ before I know what happened. Normally reserve overdrive for the interstate as I get up to about 80 before I shift into OD. I've heard several people say these things are dogs but she will get up and roll on and pulls good all the way through 4th. I absolutely love this truck! It's loud too as the exhaust is rusted off to the cat lol

No problem man. I love talking about this kind of stuff.

Are you serious about the locker? I have no complaints about mine. I recomend it to almost anyone. I run Powertrax. So does the old man, and his locker resides in the rear-end of a 350 horse / 350 torque hot rod. So far neigher of our lockers have grenaded.

Ha! I had the same idea! Unfortunately for me I had to get rid of it before the move. I made a square frame with a notch to slide a T into it to keep the square over my axle.

Great minds think alike, right?
