M5OD - replaced tranny, now MORE problems
Hi Guys,
A couple of months ago, I had a Mazda tranny die on me. I ended up replacing it with another (rebuilt) Mazda tranny from Phoenix Hard Parts. After installation, everything worked, except it would kick out of OD. Two days later, as I left work, I found that I only had 1st and 2nd gears!! After much "talking" to the truck and a little double clutching, I was able to get it into OD. It still kicked out, but after jumping into neutral from OD, I could shift into the 1st 4 gears with no problem.
Any ideas?
Phoenix Hard Parts advertise that they dyno test all tranny's prior to shipping... and they have a lot of happy customers. The engine has 2 studs that HAVE to line up to get the transmission on the engine, so I don't think alignment is a problem. Its a 5 spd on the floor, so no linkage problems... whats left?
I wanted to change to a ZF but didn't have the time/money to put into it. I thought a straight transmission swap would be faster. Now I'm thinking that I might have screwed up.....
Thanks,
RD Hensley

Doesn't the rebuilt comes with a warrenty? I would get on the phone and see what they would do to fix this. Good luck, everytime I read stuff like this it suppresses my urge to get rid of my old iron for newer trucks. (stuck in the 50's,60's,70's)

Hi Mike,
I talked to the vendors and they seem like a bunch of pretty good guys. After I explained what was going on, they told me to ship it back and they would take care of it.
I pulled it this afternoon. Should get it to UPS next week.
Thanks for the reply.

Hi RD, glad to hear they will take care of it. I think your bell housing/transmission is one piece. I once had a 4 speed behind a 302 that jumped out of high and had bad clutch chatter. Turned out that the dowel pins in the block were off center. Found out by putting a dial indicator in the bellhousing bore. Cured by using off-set dowel pins. I don't know how you would check this on a one piece unit. Your block is probably OK, only saw this one time, regards.
