I originally started out wanting a 351W however gas is now at 2.55 a gallon in some places so now i need to know which engine will get me the best gas mileage the 302 or the 351W. and just to recap my truck is a 1979 2wheel drive and its a F150. also the truck will be carborated
Depends on your expected load situation. If you are driving it empty, you can gear the 302 a bit taller. But if you are going to carry heavier loads or tow, you have to let the 302 rev a bit more, which is going to suck gas w/ or w/o a load. The 351 can pull a taller gear and a load, but will use more just because it's bigger.
Hard to win the MPG game with one of these.
$2.55? Where, I want to go fill up! We're at $2.79 already.
in clay city we are 2.28 however i drove to winchester today and it was 2.52. however the bigger city which is lexington has gas 2.28. The truck is going to be my daily driver and a cruiser so i want gas mileage. i am not asking for 25mpg i am just asking it to be resonable like 17/18mpg hwy
302, small 4bbl, small tube headers, duals, x or H pipe, 9.5 or so compression, RV cam, stock or "torker" type manifold, good ignition, AOD from a V8 car or truck, '88-93, 3.25 ratio rear axle and 225-75 x 15 tires.
Thanks i appreciate all the help. would the edelbrock 1405 classify as a small 4bbl
Not sure, I'm thinking of the 390 CFM Holley or other fine carb with max CFM of 500. Small venturies keep the velocity of the a/f charge up which helps performance, power and mpg if you keep your foot out of it.
