You may need to check the connector where the engine harness plugs into the chassis harness near the dip stick.
The two large wires in the connector are battery power to the glow plug relay.
And that connector is subject to corrosion that will make the glow plugs not work and the connector melt when it gets bad.
ya they were unhooked and i checked at the relay...i put 3 new gp in her 2day, she cycles for a normal time but no clicking after wards. hopefully she starts in the morning, people are starting to make fun of me cause its 15c out and my trucks plugged in haha..
I know how you feel bro, my glow plug issue is kicking the crap out of me. All plugs are working like magic but still no start. I am electrically artarded so call me sofa king. One day though. I was thinking about rigging up a warm air blower from an old heating gun hahahaha!
well she went this morning gp worked clicking and all.. thanx for all the help
hahaaha i love your idea i've got a old gun ill send ya haha
but seriously all your gp's work and still no start? starts when you plug it in?
itll work perfect if i plug it in, starts in less than a second. I just dont get how to test the controller, power in, power out etc so i am "fail" at that. Other than the glow plug issue, the only other thing wrong is the neutral safety switch, wont start sometimes but i pull it down into drive a few times and then back up to park and it will fire right up. who knows.
This is on an 86, so the plug is a little different.
The connector circled in red is the one you are looking for.
On yours the large wires will be yellow or tan and supply power to the glow plug relay..
Check that connector for signs of overheating or even melting on the large wire end of the connector.
Also unplug the connector and look for corrosion in the large wire terminals on both pieces.
If the terminal is melted, then you need to cut both large wires close to the connector and splice them together around the connector so they make good contact.
Caution, the wires have battery voltage at all times on the 87 and newer trucks, so be careful and unhook the batteries before you work on it.
bahh i had 9v at the gp connector, now i think my relay is toast haha i have 12v on the side where its always hot.. then i flip my gp switch, i hear a click and no drop on the stock meter.. and no volts showing on my volt meter(after the metal band on relay) grrrr ... i assume the relay is shot?

alright put your positive on the one thats marked battery..should be 2yellow wires i dunno on your truck tho haha ..shoould have 12v there all the time.,, the one with the metal band is where the power will come out for the gp's, check at the end of that metal band (when wts light is on or manual switch), make sure theres volts there...make sure your controller is grounded really well(black wire)..amke sure theres volts goin to the ignition side (when you turn the key on).. haha well thats what i got hope that helps some haha
It's on the rear of the of the motor, just to the driver side of motor center line.
It's on a pedestal that screws into a water jacket for water temp.
That is for the newer style system.
If you have a relay (solenoid) for your GP's on the passenger inner fender you have the old style system.
-Enjoy
fh : )_~
ok well that might be better.....i have two relays on the inner fender with wires heading from them to the GP's but nothing mounted on the engine. now how in the fart would i check it now? Which relay and with them being joined how do i know which is bad etc etc! Help!!
Is there a total of 3 relays??
Two on the inner fender and one on the inside of the fender??
There should be one for the starter, and one for the GP's.
You may very well have the old style system, and it is possible whoever did the setup used two relays, one for each bank or however it's broken up. I suspect this would be hard on the controller ... activating two relays.
Testing a relay (solenoid) is simple, apply 12v+ to the small terminal (marked "S", or Old style is the purple wire) (you should hear a click) and test for voltage on the output side of the relay... One side will goto battery12v+ (input), the other (output) will goto the GP's.
Unplug all your glow plugs before hot wiring any part of your GP system ... Or only hot wire for less than 10 seconds.
Is there a device on the back of the motor, behind and underneath the air cleaner??
It would have several wires running to it.
