I've tried to solve this problem off an on for a long time. I have an oscillating vibration that occurs between 55 and 75 MPH. It seems to come from the rear end. The frequency is about 3 seconds. Sort of a shudder every 3 seconds. It's not real pronouced and seems to vary in intensity with road condition.
I've balanced and checked tires and rims for round. Balanced drive shaft. The differential is a traction lock with 25,000 miles on it. Axles and bearings recently replaced. springs and shocks look good.
Anyone else have this problem? Could it be related to the traction lock or it's adjustment? It doesn't seem like a tire problem as it oscillates.
It has been my experience that usually points to a driveshaft out of balance. Did the driveshaft shop you took it to balance it, or just spin it in their lathe? Most driveshaft shops think that if the tube is straight, it's balanced, not true. They need to be balanced. I have seen torque converters, flexplates and engine accessories have harmonic vibrations as well.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 28-Jun-02 AT 12:19 PM (EST)] Drive shaft had weight added to it. Problem doen't change when I change gear or throw it in nuetral. "U" joints were replaced with the balance job. Very perplexing.
I think I'll turn it 180 degrees in the pinon joke and try that.
