Turbo Pedestal help needed!

Hi Guys,

Great site! I have learned a lot here - mostly searching and lurking.

I have a 97' F-350 and I have a solid oil leak at the pedestal. There is no oil leaking at the front of the valley and the pedestal is covered in oil. I went through about 5 quarts in 600 miles and occasionally had blue-white smoke come out the exhaust in spurts - probably happened about 50 times in those 600 miles. Does this

I just brought the truck to the mechanics - he confirmed that the leak is at the pedestal. The rub - he said we are looking at $600 for a rebuilt pedestal and $400 for labor.

What are my options? I live in Wisconsin - can I go with the removed ebpv pedestal mount? This truck is a work truck and is generally used for longer trips pulling a trailer - not a whole lot of short hops. If this is feasable, where can I find a pre-fabbed version - I looked at dieselsite with no luck.

If I can't go with the ebpv delete, what do you guys think of the rebuild kit? My mechanic hasn't even heard of this option, although he has owned 3 7.3 trucks of this generation....

Should I just go new?

Any and all input is welcome! Thanks, Jason

Wow that's pretty pricey! Do a search on EBay you will find that you can pick a ped up for a couple hundred bucks with or without the EBPV actuator. maybe try to change it out yourself or find someone else to change it for you other than this person.

If you go scrounging on Ebay or the junkyards, you need to make sure you don't end up with a late 99-03 pedistal- they are different (taller). Another OBS truck or an early 99 pedistal will work fine.
I would suggest doing the work yourself, from what I read the job isn't all that bad. You'll need new O-rings for the pedistal, check out guzzle's site for the O-rings, and he may even have the pedistal rebuild kits by now.

Do a search on ebay for johnsmith04shop (seller name) or go to his web site: Rebuilt Turbochargers| Turbocharger Kits| Turbochargers| Salt Lake City, Utah ( Ron's Turbo Service) Alot of people on here have used him, I have and he does great work, is easy to deal with and will answer any question you have, also fast shipping. I think that a stock replacement turbo is around $550. Don't buy a new one get a rebuilt one, he rebuilds them better than new and they cost less.

If you can turn a wrench you can change out the turbo, a couple of bolts are a little bit of a pain to get to but with the right tools it's not to bad of a job and will save you about $400. There are a bunch of write ups on here about turbo replacements.

I couldn't agree more with plow. Changing out the charger is not too difficult, but it will take some time to get through it.

Where are you located? Put up your location in your profile and you might have someone close to you that can give you a helping hand.

Thanks for all the replies - I appreciate it all.

Does anyone have any input on whether I should eliminate the EBPV if I live in Wisconsin?

Farm and Plow - Are you suggesting that I should just replace my entire turbo (does that come with the pedestal attached?) rather than trying to deal with the pedestal?

No, but I'd definitely go through your charger and make sure everything is up to par since you will have the unit off.

There are many people on here that live up north and do not run the EBPV. It gets pretty cold in Iowa and I've never had a problem.

I remember seeing pedestals for $300? Maybe cheaper? I've been off the net for awhile as I'm finishing planting. I actually have the one off of my truck. PM me if your interested.

jasvid,
I would only replace the pedestal if you want to go without the EBPV. Do not replace the turbo if there is nothing wrong with it.

If you want the EBPV still on the truck I would just remove it and replace the o-rings. Are you sure the EBPV is the part of the pedestal that is leaking? Most of the time it is the o-rings under the turbo or the ones under the pedestal.

One thing to think about. It may NOT be the pedistal leaking. If you do the job yourself, take the turbo and pedistal to the work bench. Apply air to the pedistal and plug the other hole with your thumb. Carefully inspect the center section of the turbo. We had one that had a hair line crack and would dump crazy amounts of oil. I would have never found it had it not been for someone telling me about that. Just something to concider. I thought it was farm that told me, but I can't remember at this moment.

I agree. I was thinking why to change the pedestal, maybe only are bad o-rings, but you should be sure that the EBPV part is not leaking.
