Dumb question, new to flatheads, I have a 59A and after looking at the starter, how do you remove it. Appears as though the two bolts on the end need to be loosened. Anything I should know before I attempt this. Thanks I am sure I will have more questions about the flathead.
From what I remember when I removed my starter to change out the drive gear, the starter is bolted through with two long bolts. Just remove the two bolts and you should be good. Just be careful not to drop the starter on yourself.
Tim, the two bolts you see on the head of the starter serve as the tie bolts (holding the starter together as an assembly) and mounting bolts. Back out these bolts until they clear the threads in the bell housing (do not remove them completely), hold the starter together as you remove it or it will come apart in pieces. There should also be a bracket between the starter and the engine block, but not always, as many were not re-installed after a starter change. Hope this helps.
Yeah, the starter will self destruct if you don't hold it all together as you're removing it. If you're going to take it some place to have it serviced or are just putting on the side while working on something else, install two 1/4" nuts on the ends of the bolts to hold the starter together until you reinstall.
