Ok I had mentioned in another thread that i may be moving to Colorado.
Well i have my shot as i got an interview lined up for June 1, with EXXON.
My problem is I am supposed to have a training class with my current employer on the second in third.
I have to be in Grand Junction, CO for 3:00pm on Monday, June 1. I am supposed to be in Lafayette, LA on Tuesday June 2nd for my class.
My question is how do i go about taking off of work to make my interview(possibly getting the job, doubling my salary to start and having a long and prosperous career) but still have a job when i get back if I dont get the job.
Thanks
if it is confusing just ask questions and ill answer them.
This is a bit dishonest, but what about calling in sick?? If you tell them you have the flu, they'll probably WANT you to stay home! What kind of training is it? Is this essential stuff or something that can be made up later?
well thats the thing i am definately flying i just cant get a flight back in time for tuesday.
I have thought about calling in sick, but i am already registered in the class and it costs 795 a person. With the economic crisis going on its hard to take chances.
I have also just thought about taking vacation days but dont know how to explain why i need a vacation day all of a sudden and cant make the class.
Oh, I see. Well, tell them tomorrow you're feeling "iffy", then when you call in sick Mon & Tues, it won't be a surprise, and maybe someone else can fill your slot in the class. I'm just brain-dumping here... You're in a pickle for sure. Any possibility of postponing the interview??

It might be dishonest, but a lot employers will let you go if they find out you're looking for a new job. If you aren't sure if you'll get the new job, I would do everything possible to reschedule the interview so you can attend your class, and then take vacation more inconspicuously another day for the interview.
Feigning an illness usually backfires, especially when they are forking over $800 for training.
If you're candid about it with the the interviewers I bet they'll appreciate that.
no there is no postponing the interview. they only hire when needed and ive been waiting for this oppertunity for a year and now its finally here. I am stoked cause its not like they interview everyone. I had to take a test to even be considered and then if you pass then you they review you application and see if you are worthy of an interview. So i like my chances just dont want everything to backfire. If it was a normal day of work it would be no big deal but this stupid class happens to fall right on the day. Even if I could reschedule the interview i would rather not because then it appears i am putting thme on the backburner.
It's tough either way. Is there a chance that if you explain to the new employer your situation they may give you another date forthe interview? Tell them that you don't want to burn your present employer with this training class. They may do it and see that you are honest which may give you some brownie points during the interview.
So you have a flight going to Grand, but the return flight will get you home later on June 2nd for class. What about finding another flight that may get you close to home. Say like Baton Rouge, New Oleans or Shreveport then rent a car to make it to class. I know that this will be a bit more of an inconvence, but you could pull this off by doing a little driving.
Or you may have to do some flight jumping to get you close to where you need to be.
Could you possibly do an over the phone interview, or video conference with them?
Ewww, my wife does interviews all the time, these are terrible. Not nearly as powerful as being there in person. They rarely hire a phone interview.
I don't have any other ideas, but if you do go the sick day route, get a doctor's not. Didn't you say you twisted wrong the other day and there was something wrong with your back requiring you to be horizontal and on some Flexeril?

Oh I can understand that for sure, but they are options, albeit probably not the best options.
You could always go to CO. then call your work and tell them, " Tell everyone that I'm ok, I escaped from my kidnappers. Don't look like I will be able to get back to LA for a couple days."
