Do I need to purge immediately after installing the first filter and then install and purge the second filter or can I just purge after both have been installed?
Maybe its not there. I change both filters at the same time and follow the following proceedure. It has always worked for me.
" After any fuel filter change, remove air before starting:
Three cycles of: “ignition on for 3 sec”, “ignition off for 15 sec”
Then ignition off for 3 seconds and START"
When I change fuel filters I drain the HFCM. Change the filter on the frame and then change the filter on the engine. I then do the three ignition cycles and then start the engine and check for leaks.
You only need to purge once...after you've changed both filters. Eddiedebb has the right method posted...and it works like a champ on my '04. I always listen for the electric pump to stop before I shut the key off, after three times through the truck starts right up without a miss.
Drain the water drain plug first (before removing the large filter). This is becuase it is the lowest point in the system and it will flush out any water or sediment.
When it stops (1 - 2 pints) then reinstall the drain plug and change the large filter. When putting the new filter in, snap it into the cap first and then install into the housing. Tighten down all the way.
Remove and replace the small fuel filter on top.
Remember to oil/lube all o-rings before you install both filters.
Turn key on and wait 3 - 5 seconds... this will purge all air. SOme do it more than once... but just wait 3 - 5 seconds and you will be good (no real wrong way though).
Your done.....
Only use Motorcraft/Racor or Int'l fuel filters. "Will-fit" fuel filters are not OEM... they look the same... but lack the same filtering media and water seperating media.
I just changed mine a fews day ago. Follow steps as above. I also installed the upgrade plug in the HFCM. Had no problems and started after purging air with the key cycles.

Good luck,
Use motor oil, not diesel fuel. The diesel can cause the O ring to swell and then distort while tightening.
Finished getting the new filters in..what a snap! The old filters were black with trash. I suspect they have never been changed. Next up the oil change!
If you had no problems with the fuel filters, the oil filter is really a snap. Recommend getting a Fumoto drain valve and after that you won't even need a wrench to drain the oil.
one thing that needs to be checked before putting the cap back on the filters is that the spacer with the little fingers from the old filter are removed. i changed mine yesterday and the "ford tech" that changed them last left the spacer from the old filter in the top housing so when he installed the new filter with the new spacer he ended up crushing the filter and it didn't seat all the way down so i've been burning partially filtered fuel for the last 10K miles!
If you have spacers on your oil filters you are not using racor filters and you are looking for trouble and Ford will void your warranty if you have engine problems. Guarranteed.
