Ok, so I took my Expy into the shop today for a couple of rattles and regular maintenance stuff. The rattle was from a couple of rusted out exhaust hanger brackets, no big deal. He also noticed that one exhaust manifold bolt had broken and a few more are right around the corner. He gave me a price that I can not afford right now. My first question is, are complete new exhaust manifolds or exhaust headers needed? If I wanted to do this myself what would be a reasonable time table, 6 to 8 hours or a complete weekend? I have done some minor wrenching, so I think I could do this without too much trouble.
Now might be a good time to put headers on. The amount of time required depends on the bolts holding the manifolds on, how difficult it is to remove them. Another fun spot is the tube that runs up to the EGR. If everything goes well you should be able to do the job in 4-6 hours.
Thanks for the anwser. I've only had a little time to look around for what is avaible. What is a good choice? I'm not really looking for any extra power or milage, just a good replacement. I don't want to drop a lot of money into, so no hig end special coated super duper gain 100 hp type of headers.
I forgot to let you all know what this is going on. It is a '98 5.4 XLT 4X4.
Sometimes it is necessary to cut the old manifolds in order to be able to remove them, or they are just flat out warped. It's a pretty good idea to plan on replacing them.
I am using the Gibson shorty uncoated stainless headers on my truck. They were not too crazy of a price and I have had them for over 3 years with no problems.
