Manifold Gasket Replacement

There's a ticking coming from the driver's side of the engine most of the time it's running. The previous owner said it's probably a blown exhaust gasket and he even purchased one (I have it now). A mechanic I know said that's what it sounds like to him too.

<O</OSo I have a couple questions/problems with the gasket replacement:
  1. One of the bolts is broken off (see 2nd pic below). I guessing that's why he stopped trying to replace the gasket. I'm concerned that more will break once I start. I need some guidance on how to get that broken one out of there. That's a funny angle and not much room to maneuver.
  2. Based on the rust factor, is it a good idea to replace the manifolds altogether? I'm not trying to turn this into a mega exhaust system replacement project but while it's off?
  3. Ignoring what I said in #2 about the "mega exhaust system project", if I decide to replace the manifolds, then the timing may be right to look at adding dual exhaust (which is one of the non-stock things I'd like to do eventually).<O</O

You can't see it that well in the pic below, but the previous owner broke off a bolt trying to get the exhaust manifold off.

To remove the manifolds will require the use of a good penetration oil like Kroil or Gibbs sprayed on the bolts daily for at least a week. You will probably break a few based on the pictures you posted. If this happens there is no reasonable way to get them out without pulling the heads.

It needs to be fixed and unfortunately pulling the heads may be in the cards.

Just went through that whole ordeal. I broke 4 out of the 8 (all top ones). I decided to pull the head and intake manifold off because of the typical FE intake oil leak. I drilled out the bolts and just put bolts & nuts on instead of retaping the holes, had to do alittle grinding on the exhaust manifold but all worked out ok. Just take your time and there's alot of posts on how to do it. Good luck !!

First side is off

Thanks for the pointers. I used PB on the bolts for a few days and was able to remove 6 out of the remaining 7 bolts. I had another one break but it broke right at the head of the bolt, so when I dropped the manifold, I was able to wrestle it out with vice grips. So I have 1 last broken bolt to get out - need to go get a drill tap set.

This is the manifold disconnected. I've wire brushed and steel wooled around the manifold and head openings.

What is recommended before putting the new gasket in? Should I degrease around the openings? Is there a sealant that I should use? The guys at Napa said they didn't think I needed anything - just the gasket.

Thanks!

Fred, I didn't use any sealant just the gaskets. I made sure that the sealing surfaces were clean and not distorted. I replaced the bolts with grade 8 bolts and used anti-seize on the threads. No leaks, no problems. Good luck.

1961/72: Ford did not install exhaust manifold gaskets on FE engines (excepting 406/427), just stainless steel heat shields: C1SZ-9448-E .. Left / C1SZ-9448-F .. Right.

1958/60 & 1973/76: Nothing was installed, metal to metal = exhaust manifold to head.

Since I don't see any evidence of these shields in the above pics, the manifolds were at one time R&R'd, aftermarket manifold gaskets (Victor, Fel-Pro and etc) were installed.

I used victor gasket with high temp RTV on both sides of the gasket. I did alot research on this on different forums and this is what most recommeded.

My manifold surface wasn't the best and thats why I went with victor & the RTV.
