The 4X4 vacuum solenoid can fail and cause a leak in the vacuum system. Since all the inlet and outlet airflow is switched with vacuum motors, the leak deprives them of their source of power and the system defaults to the defroster for safety.

Verify vacuum pump works, then verify vacuum isn't being bled off elsewhere by something leaking.

Were you able to solve your problem.

I'm watching this thread because I have the same issue. No vacuum to the black line going into the cab. Where is the vacuum pump?

Passenger side right in front of the a/c unit and below the hood strut.

well after not having to use the truck for 5 day's, I get in start it up and the hvac system is working just fine after only having air defaulting to defrost the last time I ran it. WTF! I am totally convinced it will fail again at the most inopportune time.
