Replacing with R134
My next question is can I replace all these parts and bring it to an A/C shop and have them charge the system. It has a leak, when I open the system will I have to replace the oil, meaning will it burn out the compressor when I open it up?As you can tell I know nothing about A/C.
Thanks any help will be appreciated
What all are you changing? Theoretically, you need the new barrier type hose for R134 and any metal parts (evap core and condensor mainly) would need a complete flush with AC flushing agent and drying out with compressed air. To be safe, change out everything for new parts. Especially if you have a leak and don't know where it is.
You can take it to a shop and have them evac and charge it. If there is any pressure left at all, it needs to be evac'd by a shop - you can't legally work with R12 without a license. But....when you get it all back together with new parts, you can go to autozone and borrow a vac pump and get your self some gauges and a few cans of R134 and charge it up yourself. Yes you need to add oil too. Do a web search and you'll find a chart for your truck of what type of oil and how much and about how much freon you'll need. You'll also find the evac/charge procedure. Once you do it, it is pretty simple.
