roller cam?
whats a roller cam consist of? I have an older block(79). Besides pushrod length, roller rockers and lifters what makes the cam itself a "roller"? Whats in the retrofit kits? Is there write up and how tos on it? Im wanting a fairly high winding motor, trying to figure my stuff out. thanks

you would be better off finding a 93+ f4te 5.8 block. the retro kit if i recall is very expensive and for your 79 motor you would have to run a small base roller cam which is also very expensive. finding the roller 5.8 would cost less and have good e7 heads already on there.

A roller cam is finished with a hardened and polished surface on all the cam lobes versus the rough and dull finish found on a flat tappet cam. Both these cam types typically use hydraulic lifters and that's what the vast majority of passenger vehicle engines are equipped with because they are quiet and require no adjustment. All hydraulic lifters have a maximum rpm limit around 6000rpm. If you want a real high rpm motor you need to go to a solid lifter, be it with a flat tappet or roller cam. These lifters can sustain rpms up to 8500rpm and beyond.
