I just got myself a '49 F-1 and this question has probably already beeen answered, although an hour or so of searching the forum hasn't turned anything up.
Anyway, I need to remove the inside door release and window crank handles. I understand they are held on by pins which are covered by the spring-loaded rings at the base of the handles.
How does one get at those pins? I can't pull the rings far enough inboard to expose them, and the rings are flush up against an add-on plastic inner door panel, so they can't be pushed outboard at all. Of course, I can't remove that plastic panel until I get the handles off...
Any help would be greatly appreciated - I'm probably overlooking something simple, but I'm at an impasse for now.
You're going to have to force the ring as far back as possible, there's no other way unless you cut the plastic door panels around the rings. The pins are some times hard to see. The are flush with the outside of the handle's tube and you might have to look for them at all angles. You'll also will need a narrow long punch to get at them.
But I'm still stuck - I pry those rings as far up against the handle body as I can (and then some - I bent one...), and have looked from all angles, but I can't see the pins at all. All I do see is a tiny bit of the chrome-plated handle base and a short length of square shaft. I'm assuming the pins go through the base of the chrome handle and then through the square shaft?
Could that plastic add-on inner door panel be what's causing the problem? It's maybe 1/8" thick, but the guy who put it on HAD to have had a way to install the handles...
It sounds like you are going the wrong direction. Don't pull to the handle, push away from the handle and to the door panel. I have used small wooden wedges to push so that I could expose the pin. Hope you understand where I'm going with this ?? Greg M-47
You need to push the trim rings back toward the door away from the handle. If still the stock handle the pin can be put it two ways each way is 90 degrees from the other. So the stock handle will have four holes in it. The pins can be a real pain to get out sometimes and I've had to resort to cutting the handle to get them out.Try to use a punch that is as wide as the pin as the pin can easily mushroom on you then you will have to cut the handle off. Handle and trim rings are reproduced if you have to cut them.
I never did get the handles off, but I did resolve my problem. The latch release bar was bent, causing it to interfere with the window raise/lower mechanism. I was able to bend the plastic inner door panel far enough away to remove the access panel so I could reach up and 'adjust' that release bar. Now the window rolls up and down freely.
Someday though, I'll have to get those handles off for some other reason and I'll remember your tips!
The pins are also tapered so they will only come out one way. Mine were flush on the side they needed to be driven from.
Actually they are not tapered, if yours are then probably got mushroomed from being smacked into submission. Some come out real easy while others refuse even with penetrating fluid. The shaft is steel and the handle is aluminum, pin is also steel and rust will glue the pin to the shaft.
