Last night I was removing the plastic cover on my 02 7.3 and talking to my wife at the same time... note to self....PUT TOOLS DOWN WHEN JAWING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Anyway, the long and the short, my socket came off my ratchet and fell into the wheel that drives the fan and I can't get to it.
Does anyone know if I need to remove the fan to be able to loosen the bolts on that wheel to remove the socket. I've tried to get it out but Im afraid Im going to have to loosen the wheel so I can get to it.
thanks,
Derek
Derek, if it went in, it will come out, just alot of time. You can remove the nuts/bolts for the fan, and be able to slide it a bit, but not much at all. You are best to just remove the fan, then the bolts.. good luck..
Don't honestly know, but if it fell in by gravity and bounding, it can theoretically come back out the same way. Do you have some sort of extension tool with a magnetic end on it? I've used that successfully a number of times to get screws out of holes in structural frame members when my fumbling fingers let one go at the wrong time.
X2 on the telescoping magnet. I have 2 of them also. One thing I have found works well when there is alot of metal around and it wants to stick to everything is take either a piece of hose and slide it over the magnet part so only like 1/2" or so is sticking out so it wont stick to all metal around what your trying to pick up with it. Or you can put like electrical tape around it to make it not quite as strong on the sides ect to keep it from sticking to everything you dont want it to stick to. Just my .02.

Good idea Lance. I usually just get pissed and cuss a lot.
I dropped one behind the water pump pulley. I freaked out. Sat there for a little bit and took the belt off and turned it a few times and it slid right out. Not sure what would be easiest for the fan. Never happened to me(knock on wood) yet!

Don't forget throwing things.
When I installed my DP Tuner, I dropped my 10mm deep well while loosening the bolt on the PCM plug. I kicked, shook, and rattled everything I could to try and get it to fall out, looked in there with a flashlight, crawled underneath and looked up from the bottom... never could find that socket. I drove about 2 miles up the road and heard a "PING!" sound and saw something shiny go flying out from under the truck. Bye bye 10mm!
I tried a magnet, I tried to push poke prod roll etc etc... no luck.
The socket is at the bottom of the pulley whell in between where the 2 bottom bolts are and is right in between them.
They also make magnets on a flexible shaft. I have one of those, too. Patience and keep trying. You will end up getting it out with less work than removing the fan.

Oh trust me there has been those times too. Pissed, cussing, yelling and once in a great while a flying tool out the shop door in the gravel. I learned long ago if your going to toss a tool make sure its a hammer or something that wont get hurt on the landing in the gravel and dont park anything down range of the shop door. lol

Dang it Chase beat me to it.
I did almost the same thing when I installed my DP only I lost ratchet and all in the black hole down there. I finally had to go fishing with my magnet and got it back so luckily didnt lose the whole works but I feel your pain Chase.

The vanity in our guest bathroom has these 2 odd shaped holes in it down low... I can't remember what I was working on, but I was using the pliers on my Leatherman for something when they slipped off and pinched my finger. I got PO'd and flung the Leatherman, expecting to hear the typical sounds of a flying tool, but instead heard this dull "THUMP." I apparently threw my Leatherman dart style, and the dang thing stuck straight in like I had done it on purpose!
