differences between t-18 & t-19?

differences between t-18 & t-19?
I looked at a truck the other day that had a four speed transmission. It had a granny first and fourth wasn't marked as overdrive. Without crawling under the truck (it doesn't run, it's parked in a field, and I was in my work clothes) how can I tell what transmission it has? The door code says K (C6 auto) so there's not much help there.

Without crawling underneath or tearing the floor up, you'll have hard time "id"ing it. The usual methods are to check the build tag( underneath on the PTO cover or the rear output housing), the shifter housing itself (aluminum NP435, cast steel BW T-18 or 19), or the casting-part number stamps. I recall reading that the T-18 trannies had reverse located over and up instead of down. Never have seen that, though. The shift patterns are identical. If you want a positive id, you'll have to get a little dirty.
