error code 617 1-2 shift error

error code 617 1-2 shift error
After posting about my 92 Ford f-150 not shifting right, reran my little code scanner and sure enough this time with key on engine off it produced a code of 617 which the book says is a tranny problem( no joke) 1-2 shift error. does any one know what may cause this or could it be any of a dozen things?

It means the computer didn't detect an RPM drop when it should have made the 1-2 shift. There are many, many things that could cause it. I recommend getting a Ford (not Chilton's) manual and go through the diagnostics for no 1-2 shift.
