what is acceptable and maximum pyrometer reading on 6.0 stroker,,, stock or with tunes?

 

I don't know if anything changed with the 6.0, but I'd guess 1200 - 1250 for a guideline on max readings if your probe is pre-turbo. If you're running tunes on the 6.0, make sure you read up here and understand what is safe before you blow a head gasket. Might need to swap out the head bolts for some head studs running a tuner.

basicly 1250 or so and you should be fine I would try to stay under 1400 for sure but even that for short periods (1/4 mile) shouldn't hurt but stay upwards of 1300 for much longer than that and dont be surprised if you end up with a bad hg. 1 thing to look into if you are going to put a programer in is doing arp head studs

 

i know for a fact pullin underload, i get about an 850 reading on my pyro. i'm thinking of adding a 50hp flash tune... that would equal to what a 200 f increase maybe?

 

Where is your probe - before or after the turbo?

 

850 is normal when just crusing I run around 750-700 with cruse set at 75mph. Its hard to say what u will run with a tunner some of it depends on witch tunner and who's tunes you are running. If your egts are too high get a 4" or 5" turbo back exhaust with cat delete pipe. Make sure it is turbo back. Cat back really dont help anything

 

I am thinking about adding one on My 6.0.How hard are they to install?Should I let the dealer do it due to any warranty issues?

 

They look fairly simple to install with the right tools. I would think the only thing that could cause a warranty issue would be using a underrated thermocouple or not using a fuse before you connect it to a power source. But thats just me thinking..I dont know for sure. Asking your Ford shop is the only way to know.

 

if you are talking about a pyro gauge they are really simple do a seach on here there are plenty of threads about installing one. As far a warenty issues there should be none. I dont even know if the dealler would enven install one its not anything that is factory.

If its after the turbo i think the redline for pyro is around 900 or 1000? Not sure on those numbers though. And again i think that all depends how far back in the pipe you put it. Best place is the manifold to get accurate temps.

why is 215 such an alarming number on the coolant temp? I run that when pulling on a hot day pretty steady. My ford tech told me that it is good until it hits 235, then it loses the capacity to cool itself back down.

 

Some say fan kicks on at 210, some say 215, others say 220. Engine begins to defuel at 227 deg (not 235 - not sure where your tech got this from unless there was a misprint in the OBD-II manual - which I doubt). The thermostat begins to open at about 190*F to 195*F and is not fully open until about 215*F to 219*F

The alarm point in my table is definitely conservative, and can (should) be adjusted for your particular vehicle, but IMO I wouldn't want to see more than 220 *F. I personally will set alarm points based on how my truck normally operates so that I know if something changes (this way you are not "in trouble" as soon as the alarm point is reached). Always investigate if something that has always ran a certain way suddenly changes

Engine temperature is not the only parameter that the PCM monitors to determine cooling fan operation. This is the reason that you will see some variation in engine temperature as it correlates to fan operation. The operation/description of the FSS (Fan Speed Sensor) from the PC/ED manual has a fairly good explanation as to how the system "thinks". This is not your traditional engine hits temp X and the fan clutch locks up. The fan speed sensor is a Hall-Effect sensor integral to the vistronic drive fan (VDF). The powertrain control module (PCM) will monitor the sensor input and control the VDF speed based upon engine coolant temperature (ECT), transmission fluid temperature (TFT) and intake air temperature (IAT) requirements. When an increase in fan speed for vehicle cooling is requested, the PCM will monitor the FSS signal and output the required pulse width modulated (PWM) signal to a fluid port valve within the VDF.

edit - to summarize the way I intended the table, the alarm point is just that - a warning. It is not the danger point. The same question would apply on the tranny. You should be able to go up to 250 or even higher for short durations. The tow/haul does not begin to flash until 275. My issue is that the gauges do not see that hottest places in the system, so being conservative is a good thing. I never want to defuel due to high temps or see my tow/haul flash due to high temps. I would want to back off of the pedal well before that time.
