I cleaned the engine bay on Red this afternoon. I did it like Costa did Gunk wait 15min spray with the hose but I used the gunk again and then the MEAN GREEN and some Simple green and it came out really good. To tell you the truth I was hoping it would start and run good and it did I used a lot of water in there.
Now since its clean in there I hope I can put on my new boots and the GTP38r tomorrow.

I'm gonna use Simple Green.

I'm going to wait until I have a full day to clean before I start pulling things apart to clean them. You've seen my engine bay and it's certainly not a project that can be completed in a matter of a few hours. It's an all day thing.

I'll do it Sunday or next weekend. Depends. I've got to go to Gettysburg on Friday and Saturday so that kills most of my weekend.

Try using th Gunk 1st. I may do that to make life easier. Mine is ok but no where near as clean as some of the others here.

Here's a picture of my engine bay. It looks a little different right now, but the nastiness is the same.

On another note: I'm guessing that if I'm going to be putting gunk on my engine and then hosing it off I ought to cover my 6637 up somehow. Maybe use a grocery bag or something?

Be careful spraying water into your engine compartment. Do you best to cover the alternator, wiring harnesses, anything electrical.

I intend to only do the areas near the spider where it's extra nasty with Gunk and a hose.

I'll make sure to cover everything up good though. I'll probably reinstall the AIH so it can get disgusting instead of my
shiny new parts.

1 quart sized ziploc bag and a rubberband to go over the PS neck (there is a vent hole in the top of the PS cap). 1 plastic grocery sack to go over the ALT. Remove 6637 and cover intake tube with 1 gallon size ziploc and secure with rubberband. ICP plug needs to be filled with dielectric grease before washing. try not to spray the simple green directly on the bearings on the pulleys, it will work inside and casue them to squeek, and DO NOT SPRAY the underhood fuseblocks with water or simple green . Windex, on a paper towel works fine for those covers.

An old toothbrush does wonders for scrubbing, but depending on how varnished the intake spider is it may take steel wool.
On EDIT: Jim does not have an accent compared to Petes7.3PSD (Peter). Great guy, bu is like an episo of da Sopranos when you on da pho wit him Fugghedaboutit

Thanks, Brandon!

I've got an old (new) toothbrush I found under the seat of the Jeep still in the packaging, but I don't think anyone would really want to use it. I plan on using that for cleaning battery terminals and such.

Looks like I'll be making a trip to Autozoo for Gunk, Simple Green, and Dielectric grease.

Hmmm. The preparation itself appears to be more work than what I was planning on doing with the cleaning. I think I'll stick with the oil and grease under there. It's well lubricated and nothing squeaks or squeals or rusts.

A tip - baking soda and a tiny bit of water works great for cleaning old gunky battery terminals.

Hey...I have big girl panties...doesn't make it any easier to get up the energy to tackle a greasy engine bay.

Lisa thanks for the tip on the baking soda/water, but Jim told me that what works even better is Coke and them something (I'm forgetting the name hopefully Jim chimes in) that you can put on that'll keep it from corroding.

If you can keep the Coke contained (from getting all over everything) yeah it'll work too, probly better because of the carbonation - but same general chemical reaction. I never liked to use it because its really sticky from all the sugar that's in it.

The Anti-Corrosion spray, there are lots of brands. Jim, being the magician electrician that he is, probly has a favorite.
