Talking Heated mirrors working overtime ...

I am a new member and have been looking around the site learning what I can about the 6 litre. I have found this site not only to be very helpful but very friendly as well.. This spring I purchased an 06 and have been doing a few repairs before putting it on the road. This morning I noticed that the heated mirrors were on, so now at least I know why the batteries go dead after a week or so. I looked in the owners manual and since they are automatic and come on only after the engine is started I do have a problem. The key was not only off but not in the ignition at all... I will probably go and pull the fuse for now but I suspect someone out there woud have a pretty good idea of what is wrong... thanks for any ideas. Grampa"J"

Thats very strange. Can you adjust them with the key out of the ignition also? I can't think of any good reason why they would do that. You might try posting the question in the superduty section since it doesn't really have anything to do with the 6.0.

There is a relay for the heated mirrors. It may have welded contacts. It's not listed in the owners manual, but the schematic says it is in the central junction block. Under the dash, left side.

Better to pull the relay than the fuse, since the fuse will probably have a few other items on it.

I pulled fuse # 39 which is for the "heated mirrors" and so at least that will save my batteries and buys me time to find the correct relay. I cannot find the heated mirror "relay" location as it is not listed in the owners guide. The relays are numbered from 301-307 [in the guide] and 210-212 but none of them indicate that they are for the heated mirrors. Thanks for the help so far... Grampa"J"

The schematic does not show a number for the relay, but the circuit is C270J. The schematic is for 2005, but I think it is the same.

Thanks for the help everyone ... I woke up this morning to snow snow and more snow ... but at least my batteries are still charged so I will be greatful for that LOL... I goggled the # Bill gave and came up with a PDF that should help me find the correct relay and a whole lot more really good info to chew on. Funny how all our modern "conveniences" are so inconvenient to try and understand... I have a cell phone that I know about 10% of what it actually can do... a computor that I know less about... I don't even want to think about all the ***** on my camera... and now I have a 6 litre diesel that I don't know anything about LOLThanks again everyone... and happy truckin (8Grampa"J"

I believe the heated mirror relay is built internal to the fuse block, similar to the trailer tow back-up lamps.

I have read about similar problems with the internal relays. There are two way around the problem; (1) Replace the fuse block ($$$$) or (2) find the wires leading into and out of the block pertaining to the heated mirrors and wire in your own relay.

I think you are correct. Also, further review of the schematic reveals that the relay is the same one that supplies the rear window defroster, but there is a switch to interrupt that.

Personally, I would get a price on a replacement CJB, but no doubt it could be wired around. Then I would try to figure out how to open up the old one and replace a surface mount relay. If repairable, it would be a backup.

Also, a popular mod is to put the heated mirrors on a upfitter switch so they don't have to be on all the time. This might be a convenient time to do that and forget repairing the relay.
