A friend of my Nephews
's had 2 trucks taken from his driveway Friday night/Saturday morning-a 1997 F150 and a 2004 Dodge 2500 Diesel.
They have already found the '97 in a very bad section of town and are hoping that finger prints will lead them to the Dodge.
Anyway I feel that my beutiful '99 F350 CC Dually 7.3 could be next, so I'm wondering about a LOJACK and some type of security type device that would disable the engine to start even if theves hot wired it, punched the ignition, ect, I figure 1 thing to deter them driving it away and the other if they are able to take it anyway to track where it is.
Can a LOJACK unit be purchased by me and installed by me so no one but me knows where it is? I've heard shops are very secretive about where they install these things and I don't want a sole to know where it is but me.
I had LOJACK put on my truck when I bought it a couple years ago. The tech came to my house to do the install and wouldn't let me watch, dammit. The funny thing is my truck is to big to fit in the garage so who ever was outside and watching got to see him install it but I couldn't watch him..... I have searched and searched but I can't find where he put it. I just wanted to see what it looked like and he wouldn't even show me the unit.
I think it was like $700, I would have to pull the paperwork to be sure though. Seems pretty pricey but since I live like 2.5hours from the Mexican border I thought it was worth it!
You have to be a certified installer to order the units, I used to do it 5-6 yrs ago. Its a very simple unit. Sometimes you get the perfect hiding spot and when you go to test it it won't send out a strong enough signal so you have to find another spot. Its different in almost every car because of that. The units are about $200 plus install and activation.
Its usually installed on very expensive vehicles with full insurance. The insurance companies got together with them and agreed that there is a posibility for fraud if the people are able to find and remove the sending unit. You get a discount on your insurance for having it installed.
I have a engine kill on my alarm, which pages me if set off, and for those real low rent parts of town that you can't avoid parking in sometimes, I just pull my DP Tuner switch and,.. yeah, no starting that baby for sure. They are definately going to need to tow or load it on a flat deck to steal it.

Well I don't have an expensive truck or a discount on my ins.. State Farm said they are pretty common here in Az so they don't give discounts for them anymore and I have full insurance with the highest limits you can carry (100,000/300,000,/100,000). I was pissed when I found out I wasn't getting a discount, that was one of the reasons I got it. That and I guess lifted fords are the most common stolen trucks here so I figured it couldn't hurt to have it on the truck. Hopefully I never need but if I do it better do it's damn job.
I actually made a protective little case for my DP controller. It is lined with foam, and closes nicely. I will take a pic tomorrow. Use it all the time, when the hairs stand up in certain neighborhoods.
I just put a secret switch on my cars and trucks that kill the power to the entire vehicle.
Also good if parked for a while, as they do not allow the battery to get drained.
Down side is if turned off you may lose stuff like radio presets etc.
I generally only use it if parked in what i consider a high risk area.
Here, the y most common way for your vehicle to become stolen nowadays, is for it to be towed off with an actual tow truck.
Thieves are buying used tow trucks to do this.
Or stealing tow trucks, and then stealing the vehicles with them.
I now question any and all tow truck drivers I see hooking onto a car or truck.
I do not assume they are towing it legit.....I stopped a guy that was recently hooking onto a fairly new looking toyota yaris.
He said he was towing it from a persons driveway because it would not start, and was asked to haul it to the local toyota dealer.
He seemed to have reasonable answers, and when I called the number on the side of his truck, it reached a real phone, where a lady answered.
She knew of the truck by its unit #, and the drivers name, as he told me.
So I let him continue.
I no longer trust anyone I see driving a tow truck though, I do know that.

Hi Cris, pretty pricey but considering how close you are to the border and such a good looking truck, def worth the piece of mind. Thanks
