i have two f 350 one is a 85 4x4 with a carbrated 460 my second truck is a 88 2 wheel drive 460 efi just wanted to know how much work is involved in switching my 85 to the efi motor and trans from my 88
welcome to FTE.. why do you want to switch? I think I understand you want to put the efi in your 85. which is a great motor but you can do a lot more to the 85 motor as far as rebuilding options. The speed density is really limited on cam choices and other options due to the computer.
yes put the carbed intake off your 85 motor onto the 88 motor and drop it in, the transmission from the 88 won't work because it doesn't have a transfer case and i don't beleive you can bolt one on to a 2wd tranny, you'd need to use a divorced transfer case
Maybe he just wants the easy starting and the consistent drivability in all weather quality of EFI and has no intention of modifying the motor. Unfortunately swapping induction on the 2 motors also involves swapping heads, for some reason Ford significantly changed the 460 EFI heads and the ports don't line up with the old carb intake. Obviously the complete engine wiring harness, computer, and distributor has to be moved, as well as the high pressure frame rail fuel pump, and a fuel return line installed. The 2wd tranny is not convertable to 4wd so that has to stay if you still want 4wd. After all that, it's a lot of work for minimal gains, but it would be worth it IMO if the '88 had a 4wd OD tranny.
