Transmission doesn't work properly
Just want to get some advice on my Explorer '95 XLT. The problem with it began almost 5 months ago, it has problems with shifting and sometimes it "shifts back" , when in highway if you are in 3rd, it suddenly shifts back to 2nd and obviously the RPM increases a lot, sometimes also, even if RPM is high it does not shift into next gear, I already take it to the shop and despite they "fixed" the transmission and look for problems in sensors, wires and computer, the SUV still has the same problem,
it is very difficult because once it starts it continues until you let it rest for while and is cool, when this problem comes it always appears the O/D light blinking, and the O/D button does not stop it,
does anybody has an idea what it happening ??
Good luck!

Same exact thing happened to me - following a new tranny install (@ 94K miles). Thought the new tranny was screwed up. Kept shifting and not shifting into OD without pushing the button.
I troubleshot it by removing the shifter on the steering column and low and behold - two of the three wires were intermittently shorting out. This signal confuses the hell out of the solenoids in the tranny - and responds with erratic behavior. Common thing on the fords I found out. Even so, both local dealers had to special order the shifter handle (~$70 I think). I ended up repairing it myself with a little solder and heat shrink. Still - a temporary solution. Need to get a new one.
Once put back together, the tranny worked perfectly! Quite the relief!
Good luck.
