Mine regens every 100 miles but there is always a trailer and I run interstate a LOT. 2 to 4 times per tank of fuel.

Looks like my problem is related to all the in town driving I've been doing. Got the chance to get out on the highway for a few miles, and after a little tailpipe smoke (not a good thing?) things have gone back to normal with the length of time between regen cycles as well as my fuel economy. Hope this doesn't continue to give me trouble.

the smoke is most likely related to all the build up.

I've only had my truck for a few days, but it seems to clean the exhaust filter every day. I'm only going to and from work which is only 8.5 miles each way. The truck isn't even getting up to temperature. Hopefully when the weather breaks and I'm towing my trailer to the races it'll stop doing it constantly. It seems to be getting about 11.2 MPG

Thats your problem there.

A gas powered SD would have been better for that type of driving. I can drive less than 5 miles in 15 degree weather and my gasser will be up to operating temp.

I usually don't work this close to home. I'm in the pipefitters union and am always working some place different. (out of state a lot) and in the summertime I race motocross every weekend (april thru october) all the tracks are 1-2.5 hours each way and I pull a 24' enclosed car hauler. Racing's the only reason for diesel.

Ford didn't build it.

This is what I am doing currently. I purchased a used 2008 Ford F250 with 20k miles on it because it fit all the requirements I wanted out of the truck. I use this to drive in town to and from work. I only have a 2-3 mile commute and I constantly see the exhaust cleaning filter message on.

I am assuming it keeps turning on cause it never finishes.

Is it just that I should not do any city driving period? Is removing the DFP the only solution to clear up these issues even though it is illegal here in California?

Yes your drive cycle is killing you. Take it once a week and run it for several miles to get it good and hot and complete the cycle. That may help.

Exactly the reason I bought an 07. I just don't drive enough to allow regen to complete. I have a buddy who will be pulling in to his driveway when the drive to clean message pops up and he will actually turn around and drive aimlessly for 20 minutes until it completes. I can't afford to waste time and money like that. The 6.4 is great if you live in the boondocks but horrible for the city. Of course you could get a tuner and DPF delete and not have to worry about it

I went out on the freeway and drove about 15 miles and the message went off. I just find it annoying that these trucks that cost nearly 50k (or how much you want to spend) require you to take time to go do stuff like this.

I am not sure how common it is that people just remove the DFP and drive at the risk of being caught, or only put it back on to get smogged. I thought I did a lot of research on getting a truck so I could start camping and going hunting more often. Apparently I did not do enough research. =) So, I apologize if I ask questions that people already have.

I am new to all of this but I am slowly doing more research about the DFP and tuners. I read that H & S makes a tuner called Black Maxx that supports a DFP delete.

Get a SCT tunner and custom tunes

Get a good tuner like a SCT live wire with custom tunes. Also understand that you are breaking federal law by removing the DBF filter.

You will also void your warranty if you remove it. That will be the first thing the dealer will see when they pull your truck into the bay. If you can register your truck in a state where you can do it that is fine but do you want to void your warranty? I wish they would of left the diesels out of this emmisions control bull****. The Chinese and coal burners are emmiting 100 times more polution than us pick up owners.
