On deceleration or no load coasting I get a vibration possibly cyclic in nature. Could this be the U-Joints giving me a fit? It also clunks into reverse and that has always been a U-Joint issue sign. I just don't want to chase a ghost.
also anything I need to be aware of in this model truck?
if is not the u-joint it would possible be worn pinion bearings in the differential steps to take remove diveline and inspect if its your differential yoke will be loose
when you say the yoke will be 'loose' do i understand that as saying, there will be movement of the yoke before the tires start to turn or is the movement i am looking for axially?
Check the u-joint caps for signs of rust. Often when a u-joint fails it's due to lack of grease. The bearing rollers will disintegrate into a fine rusty powder. Chock the wheels and put the trans in neutral. Try to move the joints vertically and side to side. If there is play in them it will show up.
Yes there will be some movement before the tires start to turn. This is refered to a backlash and is factored into the differential. Excessive lash is a result of wear, damage or incorrect gear set up.
Thank you.
Sunday seems like a good day to replace some U-Joints, any tricks on the F100 I should know. it has been many years since i replaced any u-joints but I am fairly sure it's not beyond my ability.
I would like to thank everyone who has provided input, I am new here and will have additional questions as i am new to my truck also
once i get her cleaned up i will post some picture.
