white smoke

Have an 04 F350 and I am having the white smoke problem. Does it for about the first mile I drive then it disappears, doesn't happen all the time just every now and then. Smells of coolant and fuel. Have flushed coolant system within the last week and now none in tank. Drove this afternoon and low and behold ran hot on me.
I have a good mechanic but would be helpful if anyone else has experienced this or similar and what you did to correct. I really like the truck and with only 85K I'd like to be able to repair.

What motor? White smoke is usually water on top of the piston at startup....Head gasket issues maybe. Try some of those seal tabs they work good and won't funk up your motor...If it doesn't work then apart it comes...Diagnois first don't take my online guess.

Thanks

At least I was thinking in the right direction. 6.0 of course, I've only had the truck a couploe of months and have just really started using it to pull so you can imagine my disappointment when this started. Starting diagnosis on Monday so we'll see where that goes.

Thanks again

On a 6.0, that does not sound to me like head gaskets. Sounds like the EGR cooler. Head gasket failure usually over pressurizes the coolant system and blows it out the degas cap (puking). Not sure about the raw fuel smell, but if your exhaust smells like coolant, that most often will be the EGR cooler.

You'll need an expert diagnosis. But if you want to do some sleuthing yourself, pull the EGR valve and look in the manifold for signs of moisture. Some say to jack up the rear of the truck to try to get the coolant to run toward the EGR valve port so you can see it.

Be sure to come back and let us know what happens.

it's the EGR valve and the EGR cooler..they have failed..just got my truck back 2 weeks ago after having the same thing happen. I just ordered the EGR delet kit so i wont have to worry about this anymore.

Thanks

I was starting to think more EGR than engine which from my point of view is a lot better, not perfect, but better.
If some of you have deleted EGR let me know how that has worked out. This truck is primarily for towing so I'm not looking for great fuel mileage.
Thanks for all the feedback and I'll keep everybody posted as this progresses.

i ordered the complete EGR delet kit from River City Diesel . I talked to the mechanics on the phone for a little over an hour thurday askng questions. They told me what to expect when installilng it, tricks to install it and answered all questions i had. I also liked their design. So i'll be installing that next weekend along with 4 inch exhaust from the turbo back.
I also use mine for towning and dont need that happening again.

2004 F250 6.0. I put in the K&W stuff and it lasted a week until I had to really get on it to get to the hospital. Leaked again to the point engine was close to not turning over due to water in the cylinder. I then tried Blue Dev and that worked till I traded the truck back to Ford.

I had the same white smoke issue on my 2004 6.0 Crew Cab. It was the egr cooler. I ordered the kit from First Coast Diesel in Jacksonville, Fl. We installed it in about 10 hours time in my house garage. Problem solved and mileage is better. I could not be happier with the First Coast Diesel product. The tech help was excellent, the kit was shipped as promised and the quality of workmanship is A-plus. Highly recommended.

Help...

We removed the intake and all parts down to the valley, replaced the HPOP screen, cleaned the oil cooler, inspected the HPOP pump and installed the First Coast Diesel egr cooler delete kit. We do have a well equipped garage and some mechanical experience. It was our first 6.0 experience though. We spent around 10 hours of actual work time. This does not include time spent on this forum obtaining priceless advice and helpful tips.

ok..just wondering what you did..i'm not going that far..just to get the parts on. I work on and build all kind of stuff for rock crawling..so when it comes to gas engines and welding things together to make them work i'm good with that. I am just hoping my back holds out long enough to lay across the motor to get at things. I am going to build a 4x8 platform 2ft high to be able to stand in front of the truck and have better access to the top of the motor.

I am not able to do this kind of work and the delete kit was never even mentioned by the mechanic. The last time Ford replaced the coolor and head gaskets and within 12 months it was smoking again. Wish I had read all about this before trading the truck in. The 1st 2 times was under waranty and this time I was going to have to pay for it is why I choose to get rid of the whole problem. Sure would have been cheaper to go this route if this delete kit solves the problem.

i know what you mean..that is why i'm doing the delete kit now..I have 63K on my truck so it was covered under warranty..no telling when it will happen again ..
and of course the dealer isn't going to tell you about it. When I asked about it he looked at me like i was talking to him with two head. Wasn't till reading on here after the fact I find there is a solution.

Help...

Actually, the only additional work we did was the HPOP screen and the oil cooler flush. This only took an additional hour. The rest of the work is part of the egr cooler delete installation. You have to remove the intake to do any of the "complete delete" kits because the egr cooler is under the intake. The oil cooler assembly comes out in ten minutes and the HPOP filter is under the oil cooler assembly, in the bottom of the 1 quart oil reservoir. I do not know what year your truck is but the HPOP filter/screen is only $ 13.00 and changing it while you are in there there was highly recommended. We just back flushed the oil cooler. I was fortunate as mine had no sand in it. We cleaned the intake gaskets and reused them. They were in perfect condition. My diesel repair experience was about the same as yours. In fact, most of my mechanical experience was with small engines, atv's, motorcycles and snowmobiles. I was fortunate in having a nephew who is young and limber with excellent mechanical skills to help. He just sat in the engine bay. Good luck in your adventure. It really is not that big a deal, just takes time.
