Transmission Service

i have 75k on my 06 PSD. purchased it with 64k... should i be leery of servicing my auto transmission now, not knowing the history. i know with my f-150 at 90k most places recomended not doing it as the new fluid was too corrosive.

is that the case with my f-250? i only tow a 21ft boat (don't know the exact weight, but not heavy)

nothing to worry about. your not supposed to do a service till 60000 for the first time then every 30k after that. I bleave that is what I read here lately. Make sure who every dose it uses mercon sp only!!! and it should be flushed with a heated machine to make it effective.

According to the manual, flushing or changing the fluid should be done every 30k miles.

Is there anything different between a 2003 and a 2006 torqshift trans? You change the trans oil the 1st. 30,000 miles and each 30,000 then after in the 2003.

I realy wasn't sure on that I was planing on looking it up in the book when I get time. That's why I said that is what I read. I could have swore that I read a topic on here that mark started about the reason for the 60000 first change

No the 06's are the same. It is the 08's that are recommended for 60k service (IIRC)

That's just not true. New fluid will not damage a transmission.

Does anybody know on the torqshift trans about inline trans filter located near radiator or of one inside of trans pan. I am considering doing trans fluid change, but I am curious about the filter situation. There is a drain plug on pan, so I am wondering if it is necessary to drop pan?

Changing the bypass filter is a piece of cake. I used an impact wrench because using the ratchet "bent" the connections more than I was comfortable with.

You can drain the fluid from the drain plug, but dropping the pan is better IMO. You can clean the pan and the magnet when you drop the pan.

The internal filter is really just a screen. It can be cleaned, but it does not need to be replaced unless it is damaged.

The gasket can be re-used if it isn't damaged.

Thanks for the info Mark, you have a nice ride there, you think I can get away with changing bypass filter and draining pan?

Are you having any problems? How many miles on your truck? What has been done with the fluids and filters in the past?

I got about 120k on it, bought it with 94k, no problems just preventive maintenance.

By all means, drop the pan and clean it all out. Personally I would replace the internal filter at that mileage, no matter what it looked like. Be sure to look for metal, etc when you do. Also - be sure to refill it with ONLY Mercon SP.
