OK, got kind of a weird one here, my parents purchased an '03 Expedition from a used car dealership somehow after receiving the title from the dealership my mom has lost it. She called the DMV and they said to have the dealership apply for a duplicate title (a $10 charge), she contacted the dealership and they want $500, in CASH no doubt, to do this. They say it is because the truck came from an auction and this is how much the auction service charges. I think it's ridiculous, so I called the DMV to see what could be done they say that is the only way and the dealership can charge what ever they want. I called the dealership to ask the name of the auction service so I could contact them directly and they won't give me the name.
Does anyone know how you could go about tracking who the vehicle was last titled to using a VIN? or are they just screwed and have to pay the dealer? If it matters they live in Kansas, but they think the truck was originally from Missouri. Any help would be greatly appreciated I'd hate for them to have to give the dealership anymore money.
I don't know why the DMV told you to go thru the dealer for a new title. They should be able to send you a duplicate. I lost a title from a NY car. I ordered a new one online for a fee (not $500). Try asking another dealer for some info. I would also talk to the DMV again.
my parents have never registered the truck in their name, so whoever owned it before is still showing on the title. I would assume that is why the DMV won't do it.
file for a lost title at the dmv. The way it works here is they send paper work to who ever the truck was last registered to then in x amount of days if there is no response they will award you the title, give you a temp copy and send you a new one is so many days
If it matters they live in Kansas, but they think the truck was originally from Missouri.
Have you tried contacting the Missouri DMV? Perhaps if you explain the situation to them, they can be of more help since the truck was registered there previously.
