Just took a quick look at the brochures I have. 1992 and a couple older years I checked don't list ratios. Looks to me like the 3.31 became available in 1994 as 1993 lists available ratios and 3.31 isn't listed.

The 3.31 was available with the 4.9L automatic or manual and 5.0L automatic.

although 3.31 is crappy, consider yourself to be lucky not to have some of the crazy ratios found in some F100s, such as 2.73 lol.

I want to rebuild my rear end and was wondering what gears to use and also would I need to do anything to the tranny?. It's a 95 300 straight 6 2WD and I want to get better gas mileage and better drive ability at 75 MPH. Right now it feels like it's going to come apart at those speeds. I am no longer going to use it to haul or tow, more of a street truck. Any thoughts?

What do you have now?
I think the 3.31:1 is the best of both worlds or a happy in between rear end.
It is not the best puller but not that bad either.
It is not the best for gas mileage but not that bad on that one either.
I think that is why that Ford picked it in a lot of the 1995 4.9 and 5.0L trucks.

3.08. I could bottom out my speedo and my truck would never complain. Going 80 / 90 and 100 mph I could always count on getting nearly 17 mpg.

but i can do that with my 3.55's and my 351W and get 15 mpg. but then again my 5.8 has a lot wider power band. so i'd say he probably should go with like 3.08 or 3.25. but since 3.31's are so common apparently he could switch to those also.

To compare your 351 to my 300 is just silly.

Nothing silly about a 351 with 3.55 gears getting 15MPG at high HWY speed. Especially when comparing a 4.9/3.08 getting 17MPG. Seems like a reasonable and good comparison.

Anyone who drives a truck as good looking as yours simply cannot be lame.

How? The 351 has two plus cylinders and makes more than twice the raw power the 300 does.

I am thinking about the 200+ horsepower 351 getting 15MPG at 70+ MPH. Doesn't seem silly to me-if it is true.
