Talking New Diesel Driver

Hey guys, I'm 16 (soon 17) and looking to buy an IDI or PSD F-250 or F-350. Yes, I'm young, but I have a job and a spending limit of around $4500 (could spend a little more but don't want to). I'm gonna be moving up to a diesel in the next year or two from my Ford Escape. I leanred to drive with big vehicles (parents) so I know what it's like.

The point of this is too get an idea of how much I should be paying for an average condition 1992-1994 IDI Diesel truck. I look on craigslist and they seem often on there, most are in the $2500-$4000 range for a good condition truck (little rust & no damage). Is that a good price range?

Also, I know about the ownership costs involved, I have looked into it extensively. I also know that when buying to have the cylinder pressure checked on the 7.3 IDI's and all that other stuff.

Here is a truck I found that I'm interested in:
94 Ford f250 4x4 Xcab long box Turbo Diesel

If someone wouldn't mind, could you do a photoshop to make the truck Black & Silver, instead of the green color? (I think black would look nicer.)

Thanks a lot, Nick. Hope to get some good advice from you guys.

welcome to the form it looks like a nice truck since its the f250 i would check the front axle since its the split ifs make sure the halfs are solid ive hear since these engines are so heavy they can crack, other than that i mean im not nearly as wise as most of the guys on here sure they will chime in at some point but yeah just check fluids an such i got an 89 f250 for 1900 with clsoe to 300000 on it an runs like new so i mean they will go for ever, properly maintained.

It says it was properly maintained by local shop, ask if they used coolant additives, since the 7.3 was prone to cavitation.

$3250 isnt bad considering I paid $2k for mine....and its 9 years older and only 2x4.

Welcome aboard, got ourselves another young guy. I'm 17....18 in sept.

Alot of us IDI guys are young, I'm 18, but barely. I gave 600 for my 88, but that was deal partly because I work for the rancher that I got it from, and he really wanted to see someone resurect this truck after 4 years and get her moving again.

If I had the money, I would look for a 93-94.5 IDI, 5spd, 4x4 with a factory turbo, then swap out the turbo downpipe, and she'll really wake up. If not one of those then any of them will do, but I would take 1500 out of the price to make up for what the cost of a turbo kit is. I really really wish mine had a turbo, but hopefully depending on how Dyoungs turns out, I will be working on a PSD kit.

But overall I would easy give 3-4K for an IDI that was in GOOD shape, but only if I wasn't settling.

Only 2 decades for me. But it still seems like long ago .

That seems like a pretty good deal to me if it has been well maintained. And depending on how serious the rust is.

If you can get the name of the shop that has done the work on it, you may be able to ask them what has been done and see if they mention anything about coolant additives.

Welcome to the IDI forum

Jason

Remember building a "fall out shelter" in the basement during the "Cuban Missle Crissis"
Well I watched JFK get shot live on TV during the Dallas parade.
Remember watching the Beattles on Ed Sulivan.
Remember when Russia launched Sputnik.
Remember when John Glenn did his orbits.
And remember Neil Armstrong stepping on the moon.

Also remember when it took days to get a message from WV to the west coast, not seconds.

Anybody seen my reading glasses? I know I had them right here somewhere.

Whew I had that crap last monday. I got sick at work, and it took me over an hour and a half to drive 20 miles home. I puked for 36 hours straight, I was forcing myself to drink some water to quit dry heaving. I didn't sleep at all due to cramping up, and it if I did go to sleep I would wake up terrified cuz I never knew which end to stick on the toilet first.

Don't worry after 60 hours I was back at work at 80%
