Hi all. Today I replaced the VSS in my truck for the 3rd time in 3 months. Put a new one in and the truck shifts great. About a month later and all of a sudden the E4OD goes nuts along with the speedo. Is there a problem somewhere that might be knocking out the speed sensors? Or am I just a lucky guy and keep getting bad sensors?
i had the exact same problem. the bushings for the tailshaft of my tranny were bad and was binding under load. melting or chewing up the plastic gear on my speedsensor, therefore the crazy shifts & 2 speedsensors, then a rebuild of the tranny. i just got mine rebuilt because i would of had to take everything out anyway. but my truck is a 450 & the e-brake is on the tailshaft of my tranny, my speedsensor mounts on the e-brake housing.
is your speedsensor on the tail-end of your tranny?
Nope, mine is on the rear output shaft of the transfer case. It's a 4wd. It's not eating them up, as in no visible damage. They just get to showing an erratic speed then the trans starts shifting crazy. It does this all at once. Working great one minute, next minute crazy. I will say that the one I just installed cost about 5 bucks more than the others and appears to be much better quality. I hope it fixes it.
I didnt change any gears. The outer one appears to be fine, no visable damage. Can the inner gear be removed for inspection without disassembling the Tcase?
Drove the truck to work yesterday. The problem is worse with the new speed sensor. I'm gonna pull it back out and look at the gears more closely. Anyone have any other suggestions on what to look at? Is it possible for the speedo head to cause the trans to shift funny?
my truck is 2wd, so i dont know. however, i will ask my buddy, he has been working on trannies for 15 years, he would know. does your needle for the speedo jump around when you are driving? try unhooking your speedo cable from the speed-sensor. i dont think the speedo head can affect the speed-sensor. the head in my speedo was junk so i disconnected the speedo cable, just in case.
The needle will read slow about 10 to 15 mph then it will jump to the correct speed (judging by the tack). When it jumps to correct it will jump around a lot. The it returns to the slower speed which it holds steady. I will give unhooking the cable from the sensor a try to see if that helps.
oh goodie.galute,your still around.
