Stu.....Maybe I'm the cheapskate of the bunch, but $3 or $4 max.....But I'm literally 3 min away from the pizza joint I get the stuff from (Papa Johns). I also do it the easy way, and they made it easy to tip. I do it on the online account.......Place the order, and you can add the tip to the bill (I prepay with the debit card)......
I'm pretty good at reading expressions, attitudes, etc......Haven't had any bichin' about the tip......None that I could perceive anyway......
Maybe I'm just not as rich as Horsepuller......
I know guys and gals that did it for years....Some of them pulled in some pretty good bank. Depends on the tip. A lot depends on the car you're driving and the cost of gas too, I guess.....
Delivery guys deserve a tip/ Who knows when someone will jump them as they start to walk back to their car. A friend had it happin to him.
That's actually a good point.
It's an active job too.
Most pizza joints forbid their guys to carry more than about $20 on them.....You and I both know, Ship Boy (what with us living in the big city and all) that there's neighborhoods they won't deliver too also......Good for them!
I do NOT tip my barber......Don't ask why.....Just never have.......Independent barber....Built a BEAUTIFUL one-chair detached shop next to his house.......Transplanted NY guy.....Sounds like a mob barber.......(haha)......Great guy, but he'd be insulted if I tipped......My haircuts are pretty easy.....Military style.
Gifts for Christmas, however.........That's diff.......
Can't confirm, but regarding barbers, I'd heard that proprietors do NOT get tips........Only if barbers that WORK for the establishment are cutting your hair....(like in a SuperCuts, with several barbers working).....Again, I'd heard that but can't confirm.....
Furniture delivery guys and such? Sure. Depending on the load....a sawbuck or a $20 per person........
when i order pizza, i usually get the bare minumum for delivery... (i think its 12 bucks for them to deliver)... so i order a medium, and a 2 litter of coke... when i order pizza, i pay with 20s... he will come up to the door, hand me the pizzas, i will give the guy 20 bucks, and just walk back inside... some times i would mess with him... (i always got the same guy) after a while, he got used to me just giving him the 8 bucks or what ever it was... and he would just get in his car and leave... one day i was feeling rather board... so i called the pizza place up and asked for him... and asked him why he stole my 8 dollars... and asked to speak to his manager... he freaked out... then i told him i was just kidding and thanks for the pizza it was great... lol...
i did stop ordering from one place though... after i handed the guy a 50, for 30 dollars worth of pizzas... he just drove off...
I don't order any food to be delivered so I don't have to concern myself with that part. We had a person write into the newspaper opinion section that said we should always tip 15% no matter what. Now to me I don't get the idea of owing someone for bad service. I would suspect that they also have a attitude at work and maybe that is why they don't get the tips that they seem to think they are owed. It also depends on the place I go to eat. If it is at the local cafe I'm more free with the tips and as long as the food is decent and they keep my coffee filled I'm good to go. Now if I go to a "nice" place I do expect to be waited on better. When I see them at the counter laughing and giggling instead of coming over to bring me a menu I don't accept that as good service. If I get decent service I will always tip at least 15 to 20% and if really good more than that. Tips are not owed they are earned.
TIPS To Insure Prompt Service. I never liked that definition because it implies you should only do good work in hopes of a gratuity.
I would never tip for bad service. Crappy day or not. A good server will know how to keep the "crap" on another part of their mentality until shift is over. You can still be in a bitchy mood and treat a customer with respect and ensure they get great service. Maybe not your best but what they deserve.
I just see how a woman who works on my nails for 30 minutes and I give her 55.00 needs an additional 5, 10 15 bucks laid in her hand. She just made 55 dollars for 30 minutes of sitting there and using maybe 2.00 of supplies. Same with my hair. The woman is making 1800.00 a month salary form the chain she works for. I am not giving her 10 bucks or whatever. She is paid well. Average person tips 5.00 for a basic hair cut. 15 clients a day... do the math. She is doing a job she gets PAID a decent wage to do.
I do have to ponder that she does have sharp objects near my head as mention earlier.
I tip well. I wish I had pizza delivery where I lived. The guy would make a fortune.
Dang! I thought I had destroyed all those tapes!!! That looked to be one of our HeatWave bags, too. Good thing it wasn't a Ranger (was it a subaru?) Anyway, I agree that tips are earned. That's what makes them tips. I just hate it when they try to feed you some stupid line about why they are not tipping you. If you aren't going to tip, just take your money, say 'have anice day,' and go back inside. Just because we deliver pizza for a living doesn't mean we are dumb. Making excuses is infuriating to me. I'm never rude to a customer, always offer them change. I ususally say, "here (hand them the pizzas), let me get you some change." Make the small talk- I've even gotten invitations to join a bike club and one for joining the Patriot Guard! One very attractive young lady said to me "If you weren't on the clock, I'd offer you a cold beverage." I said "I get off in a couple of hours..." Her address is now burned into my memory (no, nothing happened) and when it shows up in the computer, I jump all over that delivery!!
I also track my tips, mileage and gas throughout the week and put them into an excel file I built.
Depending on the services being rendered along with the quality of the service will determine your tip if any at all IMO.
I always tip delivery personnel and most in the food industry for good service, most around here depend on it for revenue, I always pay the tip in Cash to make sure they do get it, if and when they do deserve it !
I have been offered tips from DIY customers who have rented a pump to do backyard slabs, walls..etc.. they spend $1,000 - 2,000 for the pump to be there for a MIN of 4 hours + +, then they offer me a tip for the good service, I explain to them a tip is not required and kindly refuse it, but I do appreciate the offer none the less, just the offer alone gives a sense of a Job well done, knowing I have another satisfied customer !
When a DIY spends that kinda money, for sometimes 1-2 hours work but pays the MIN of 4 hours, they're is no need for a tip I already made enough money off of that job.
All I ask for is a referral, which would be far more than any tip they could offer.
The only time I get really ticked off about tipping is when I go into a restaurant with a group and the gratuity is already added to the bill. Normally as group we would tip better if we weren't told we have to.
If I have a problem with poor service / improperly cooked food, I crank on the manager and get a discount on my bill. I still tip the server.
Okay opinion needed, had one tonight! Ordered carryout at the chinese place, when i picked it up I paid with the debit card. The receipt comes back for signature and it has the part where the consumer fills in the total and tip. Do you leave a tip, for carryout? I did not, figure all they did was take a phone order, and collect money. In fact I resent the fact that it is even presented, with the expectation of potentially guilting me into it. They never provided me a service, for all intents and purposes. so what is it? Dan

Judgement call. I agree that there are far too many tip jars around for things that aren't traditional tipping places- like at Subway. Although I usually toss a few coins into the jar at $5-bucks, I mean, Starbucks.

Funny thing about the houses right around the corner; I've gotten very good tips from them, normally. I also tend to get really good tips from people that live in trailers, too. Go figure. I don't know of any (pizza) delivery guys that would complain about a $3 tip. With the mileage re-imbursement, I average about $4-5 per trip. Tonight I made 23 runs and left the store with $97 cash in my pocket. Not too bad for a ten hour shift. The unfortunate part is that all the money came in the last 4 hours. I was getting the stiffy for a good portion of the day- that makes for a loooooooong shift!! My best day to date is a $100 day. I've been close a couple of times, but can't seem to get past that mark.
My best day behind a bar was better than $400 for one shift.

I don't.
When I eat in a restaraunt, they have to earn the tip if they want one from me. Too may servers think that it's a requirement.
Sorry, it's not. You want a tip, jump through your *** and give me great service.
Move like a sloth and, well, you'll get a sloth like tip.

Hell friggin' no!
You're doing all the work. All they did was put some duck sauce and soy sauce and a fortune cookie into the bag with the food and a spork. What's the difference between takeout and delivery? In delivery, they send a car, and you tip the driver of the car. In takeout, YOU drove the damned car all the way to the restaurant (and then back home)....
They're just running the same ticket that you get when you're sitting down and eating.......That's the only reason you see the 'tip' line on the ticket. If you tip at this point (carryout), you're just giving the damned restaurant extra money---kinda like saying, "Hey guys....You didn't charge me enough for the szechuan chicken.....Here's another coupla bucks......You need to raise your prices".......
Don't do it, man. The restaurant counts on the fact that some folks walk in, see the line with 'tip', and dutifully add a couple of bucks to the restaurant 'kitty'.........
