We are looking at an '02 super duty 7.3 with automatic. Everything else seems good now but I noticed some fluid on the passenger side by what I am assuming is the transmission fluid res. There are 2 lines running about 1/2 way up front to back. These lines and the housing above were very wet and there was a good amount of fluid on the housing.
Didn't feel like oil but thats only my best guess. Sorry for the lack of info, but new to diesels and new to these super duty's.
I'm converting from the Chevy side of life.
I'm trying to visualize where you're talking about in there. Are you talking looking up from underneath or down from the top? Pics would really help for sure...
Derek, depending on where you are at in ID I may be able to help you out. If you are in northern to north central ID (anywheres north of Lewiston) I might be able to come take a look at the truck for you. If you could post up some photos or a link to an online ad that would help also.
if it is on the passenger side, it very well could be coming from the valley of the engine, depending on the color of the fluid. So it could be a HPOP leak, leaking X pipe boots, leaking turbo pedistal o-rings. we need a good picture to really help. or like Chase said, he could come look at it for u depending where u are.
I don't have a photo available. It is below the bell housing I think. There are 2 steel lines roughly 1/4" dia. running on the passenger side below the transmission or to the side. I didn't have my camera last night or would have taken a picture.
The truck was just detailed... kind of makes me wonder if its a residue from the engine cleaner or something.
I think we will be ppulling the trigger on it today, and if so I will post up some pics. i know everyone likes them... I do too.
BTW I am in the Boise area. Thanks for the offer to look at it.
I borrowed a photo from malcolm657. If you were to look through the truck straight through the back of the front tire on that angle, that is about where the 2 lines I was talking about were at.
I just heard back from the dealership. They told me that they missed an oil leak when they sreviced it Monday. Hope they got them all.
Those are trans lines. You should definitely try to find out what fluid is leaking and where its coming from before buying.
I don't know of anyone in the Boise area... a bit of a drive for me
Thanks Chase. I am going to take it for another drive this afternoon and am going to crawl under and wipe it down real well before i go too far. Hopefully that will help me tell a bit more about things.
Hopefully they'll get it fixed for you. I've never seen or heard of an oil leak on the side of the block, unless it's the dip stick tube leaking. If it's on the back of the block and running down, then yes. There is a drain hole for the valley on the rear-passenger side of it. If anything leaks up top, it runs out that hole and down the back of the block. It can get into the bell housing and drip out of the inspection plate, or down the side somewhat. When my IC tubes were leaking oil from the crank-case being vented into the turbo inlet, I had oil running down the back of the block. My turbo pedestal was also leaking a little out of the EBPV actuator arm, but not that much. I swapped it for a new non-EBPV pedestal when I put in the van turbo, so no more worries there...
The leak was fixed! Theres still alittle fluid, mosty a water/brake cleaner/oil mix thats draining little by little out of the manifold after they pressure washed it. The leak was draining directly into the manifold is what I was told.
We are bringing her home tonight so I should get some pics up in the next few days.
Next up is deciding what to start on as far as upgrades. At this point I am thinking intake. My wife's going to hate me.
Well as long as you've already gotten that part out of the way, that should give you less to worry about in the future.
Congrats on the new truck. Do some reading here so you do your upgrades the right way and don't waste money on something you won't be happy with. Congrats on the new truck.
