Hi,
I have a 1948 ford f4 truck with a stock t-9 Borg Warner transmission (4 speed non synchronized) and a 226 flat head 6 cylinder engine. Transmission has a pto that operates a hydraulic dump bed. I am interested in upgrading the existing transmission to 4 speed, synchronized tranny with pto. Any suggestions and sources would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Mark
The easiest swap might be a '51 and up transmission. I think after '51 a synchronized transmission was standard, before it was an option. The synchronized transmission is slightly longer so you have to make sure you get the correct drive shaft:
Non-synchro tranny:
Synchronized tranny:
You can the difference by the shift pattern. As you know the non-synchro tranny has reverse to the right and down, the synchronized tranny has reverse to the right and up.
I've also read about people who have used the T-5 transmission in the larger trucks without a problem, I'm not sure if it's strong enough to do any heavy hauling.
